Edit: okay, seriously, what's the :code for the thumbs up icon. I've tried like 10 different things on my phone and none are right.

It's :thumbs ups without the space.

Console parity has struck again.
The reasons for not showing ultra gameplay before the release has become apparant.
It does run better then expected on my 290 but thanks to AMD i have low expectations.
Here is hoping this weeks AMD driver will have a CFX profile.

Only difference would be TressFX is open source, so NVIDIA can optimize it for their cards.
AMD will never get acces to GameWorks and that also means no optimizing for their GPU's.

Not exactly. TressFX was at least open so Nvidia could optimize for it. A lot of it also had to do with GPU computing performance for Nvidia at the time as well. AMD ran it better not because it was just AMD but because they had FAR superior GPU compute power then.

7970 vs GTX 680:

Look at the differences in GPGPU performance. Staggering.

So no, not "pot meet kettle". HairWorks doesn't even make sense with it's performance hit. A single head of hair shouldn't take that much to do...especially given what we did see in Tomb Raider.

Although to be fair I think it's been pretty well known that TressFX is a much better running middleware anyways, no?

guys why are there two benchmark figures for the 290X?
I'm not sure what's wrong with these benchmarks but this is what I got at max settings 1080p (HairWorks off, SSAO on and all Blur effects Off because they are ugly):

2015-05-18 22:25:55 - witcher3
Frames: 20853 - Time: 283312ms - Avg: 73.604 - Min: 53 - Max: 95

Just a random run. It's nearly impossible to replicate benchmarks in this game but still....also getting about 35fps average at 4k with same settings so not sure what these guys did but they are wrong.

TW3 needs some serious optimization - foliage and trees can look pretty awful at times, lots of things have low-res textures...color is off in a lot of places, looks great in others.

Performance wise...triple Titan Xs can "only" average about 95FPS with everything on Ultra + HairWorks on, using just one my three XB270HUs @ 1440p. Stuttering issues abound that not even G-Sync can correct...don't think it's SLI-bound because I was still getting it using just a single card. I don't see the same stuttering using dual or triple SLI in any other games, especially because of G-Sync (and with something as recent as GTA V, Tri-SLI runs buttery smooth w/ G-Sync at an average of 125+ FPS on single 1440p). The game really is just not demanding enough from a graphics perspective to warrant the amount of horsepower that it's asking for/using.

Thankfully, while the graphics aren't anything close to being spectacular the gameplay/story has been good so far.

I knew it was time to retire this thing so once the 3xx's are out this little wonderful 6870 will go into retirement and be fondly remembered as the little friend who provided me with a lot of enjoyment for almost five years. You will be missed, old boy sad-smiley-002.gif

Now bloody hurry up AMD, I want 290's to drop even more in price.

Alternatively run at lower resolution in windowed mode, like I run GTA V.

Cant believe they did not put a benchmark built in tool for this game. Bozos.

If you are comparing the open source TressFx with the closed source black box Gameworks and saying they are both the same then basically you are just argumentative.

http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2013/03/15/lara-croft-joins-geforce-with-45-performance-gain/

"GeForce gamers have come to expect an awesome Day 1 experience. But in the case of Tomb Raider, that didn’t come to pass. We hadn’t received the game in time to assure them of this – which was disappointing for them and for us.

But our software engineers, like our GPUs, are the best in the industry. And they’ve been working closely with Crystal Dynamics since the game’s release to help improve the experience for GeForce gamers.

So, in conjunction with a game patch that Crystal Dynamics released earlier today, we recommend that GeForce users update to the just-posted GeForce 314.21 drivers. They’ll provide major gains in reliability and performance in the game – delivering an average of 45% and up to 60% performance improvements (as measured with GeForce GTX 680 at 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 resolutions)."

So roughly 10 days after Tomb Raider launched Crystal Dynamics and Nvidia fixed that problem. Compare that to 4 months for Ubisoft to enable CF in Farcry 4 through a game patch.

Now Hairworks shows disproportionate amount of performance loss on AMD GPUs and the developer recommends to turn it off on AMD GPUs. They attribute that to the weaker tesselation unit on AMD GPUs. But R9 285 based on the Tonga chip (which has a significantly improved tesselation unit compared to R9 290X and R9 280X) still took a bigger hit than GTX 770 and GTX 960. Without Hairworks GTX 960 and R9 285 are tied and faster than GTX 770. With Hairworks R9 285 suddenly falls behind GTX 770.

In Farcry 4 actually R9 285 beat GTX 770 with and without Enhanced Godrays (which benefited from R9 285's improved tesselation performance). R9 285 did not lose much performance at all with Enhanced Godrays while earlier cards like R9 290X and R9 280X lost quite a bit.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/01/12/far_cry_4_graphics_features_performance_review/2#.VVrNC_mqqko

Its clear to see that the Gameworks licensees are now an extension of Nvidia marketing & PR. Its despicable.
