So... I was expecting to get a horrible monitor and having to play the rma game after reading many reviews but ummm I got a perfect monitor and I'm so confused why so many didn't get perfect ones because how did I guess get so lucky on my first try??

I personally think this monitors colors are similar to my $300 cross over from E-bay 3 years ago... I am not impressed and feel everyone was giving it way more hype then this needed. Here are some pictures.

I have my Crossover on the right.. The black light bleed is almost nothing on my monitor and has 0 dead pixels with 100% no dirt or smudges others have been talking about.

I ordered mine directly from Acer on day of release. It arrived a few weeks later with a Manufacturer's date of Jan.

Perfect panel, essentially zero back-light bleed; Love at first sight! Although the out of the box calibration was terrible!

You'll want to calibrate the monitor, They're pretty bad out of the box.

Even calibrated according to a guide, the colors couldn't hold a candle to my 2008 30 inch Apple Cinema display.

Anyone know the technical reason why the Cinema Display had much richer/vibrant colors?

You are mistaking the 30" ACD's wide gamut colour over-saturation and inaccuracy for quality.

Is having a wide gamut not a mark of higher quality? Are there good reasons why someone would not want a wide gamut for gaming?

Despite the higher price, no, in fact, it's the complete opposite. Consumer media is not created for the Adobe RGB colour space which is much larger than the sRGB colour space used by consumer media. Wide gamut monitors colour gamuts are larger than normal monitors in order to match the wide gamut colour space, but this also results in vast over-saturation when not used with programs which support colour management (work related programs like Photoshop).

Wide gamut monitors, especially the older CCFL back-lit panels use very grainy matte coatings, have very low contrast (400-700:1 in most cases) and more glow than non-wide gamut monitors, but most people think higher price=higher quality and mistake the over-saturation for 'quality.' Newer wide gamut monitors have grain free matte coatings, but they suffer from far more IPS glow than normal IPS and most suffer from really obvious overshoot ghosting (Dell U2x13H, 3014, Lenovo 30", Asus PA279Q, ect), and have poor sRGB modes compared to budget monitors. I think wide gamut monitors look disgusting when not colour managed, and I am still baffled by the fact that many people can't tell how obviously unnatural they look most of the time.

Left wide gamut vs normal monitor:
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), default quality
Left normal monitor vs wide gamut monitor

Unfortunately it's the same reason that Samsung managed to sell shed-loads of phones with ridiculously awful OLED displays - the lurid over-saturation "pops" (in that case particularly when combined with the excellent contrast ratios offered by OLED screens) and people go silly over them. Thankfully they at least now offer an option to actually get close to some sort of accuracy with them (by choosing the sRGB "basic" or Adobe RGB "photo" mode, instead of "cinema" or "adaptive", which again veer to the silly).

Ultimately it's the consumers that are generally stupid enough to always believe that "moar is betterer". I mean come on, 20 Megapixels on a phone? For posting pictures to farcebook? A good 4MP would be better (and kudos to HTC for trying, at least, even if they didn't quite pull it off). It's the exact same thing that the CPU market went through in the days of MHz being everything (And intel's truly awful netburst architecture that resulted). More gamut, more MHz, more megapixels, more more more. But fewer calories.
