iPod Touch stolen - how safe is the screen lock password?

So my iPod Touch got stolen and my biggest worry now is the information stored in there. There is nothing of value, but I just don't feel comfortable having some stranger looking at my photos and stuff. I only have the password lock there, is that enough to prevent the thief from accessing my information and would the only way to use my iPod be a hard reset/format, thus wiping what's on there?

Most people who steal ipods or iphones from a public place like a gym or bench aren't usually smart enough to work it out. I've recently come to realize how little most people know of technology... I figured most people know atleast some of the crap i knew being an IT Tech and all but ... WOW, I was wrong, I gave people the benefit of the doubt.
