Another $1000 gaming build - Page 11

I priced the igpu out to be on average 50 bucks.

Now here is where chess has things messed up. The 1231 v3 is NOT the same as a 4790. It is the same-ish as a 4770 which is why it is another 50 bucks cheaper.

The other thing I want to point out to everyone is that the xeon IS NOT THE SAME AS THE CONSUMER CHIP. It has similar performance, but it actually does have other bells and whistles on the chip that make it a xeon.

Here is the bottom line. People need to get it out of their heads that the xeon is a budget i7. It is not. They are not randomly interchangeable.

Xeon chips are totally different processors with their own pros and cons that need to be weighed just like everything else.

I tried. These guys are way too dense to understand that.

It isn't your fault misinformed users were attempting to correct informed users. We're all here to help, some are more effective than others.

I think this will be my final build (updated for 4790k and 250GB SSD, also swapped out the 2133 memory for the 1866).

Only thing I'm not 100% on is the PSU, but I've read many reviews and it seems to be a good enough one.

*EDIT: Updated link (initial one wasn't valid).
PSU is fine. Any lower and you're about pushing its limits.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes and no.

It does disable some extra power control features, but most of those have to deal with overclocking. Soooooooo meh.

The other thing it does not have is the extra little capacitors and resistors that are on the devil canyon chips, but that is to be expected.

In an absolute perfect world, you are essentially correct.

You have to be kidding me

That 620W Antec could power TWO 970s.

He is not anywhere near pushing the limits with a single 970.

Yeah, well I guess the power features may or may not be forgotten.

What do those extra capacitors actually do though? I mean yeah, on K series chips they generally help OC'ing to higher levels.. but do they really make any difference on stock clocked chips?

doubleposting..

The bottom line is there's nothing with using a Xeon in a gaming build. To think otherwise is folly.

With the 450 he would especially if he wanted to OC. It's not nice to run PSU's at 100% contrary to what y'all spew on these forums.

A quality 450W would be plenty to handle a OC'd 970.

Are you expecting a typical OC'd 970 to consume 350W? 240% more power draw than stock?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with running a PSU at 90-100% load when it is a quality power supply. They are built to do that. Only the junk ones are built to run at half or less than half capacity.
