Modem

At the moment, we are using comcast and their modem. they charge around $10 a month for modem rentals.

so I am planning on buying my own modem.

however, i dont know anything about modems and differences between each other. (help plz?? XD)

also, what are the pros and cons of renting a modem and buying your own modem? (other than the obvious, you save money long term by buying your own modem)

and what should i look for in buying a modem?

OR, could i just go and pick up some random modem and it will be fine?

I think you need to provide some more information on what modem you have right now / what Comcast subscription you are having atm?

I did the same thing for my mom in February when she was having issues with her Comcast modem/router.

I ended up with the SB6141 (might have been the 6121, I'm not sure):

http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Motorola-SurfBoard-SB6141-DOCSIS/dp/B00AJHDZSI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432143410&sr=8-2&keywords=motorola+surfboard

Paired with a good wifi router (I think I went with a Netgear dual-band).

Most important thing: Make sure you get a modem that is supported by Comcast.

http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

Also note that if you have phone through Comcast, you'll have to get a modem that supports it.

After that, it was as simple as calling Comcast to have them provision the new modem. Took ~20 minutes after getting through to someone. Then I returned the old modem to the local office. Make sure you hang on to the receipt until you're sure they've taken the rental fee off of your bill.

theres no issues with the current modem atm.

only reason why i want to swap it out is because comcast charges $10 rental fee every month so it'll be cheaper to just buy a modem instead.

but my question now comes in. is there somethings i should be aware of? and how long will the modem last? (i remember that once, for the comcast rental modem, they told us to bring it in due to a new upgrade modem being out. so with our own modem, we wont be able to "upgrade". so how does that work out?)

also, such as
for example,

if i were to swap out mobos, i most likely need to reinstall windows.
changing cpu, i have to make sure it matches the mobo chipset.
etc etc

So you already have a Docsis 3.0 modem, so your not going to see anything different when you upgrade to your own modem.

Now, if you want the best modem money can buy this seems to be pretty great, good reviews too.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MA5U1FW/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=

Now since you haven't said your internet package, you might not need anything that extreme, and be fine with
http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Motorola-SurfBoard-SB6121-DOCSIS/dp/B004XC6GJ0/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1432176757&sr=1-1&keywords=Docsis+3.0

And i remember hearing some talk about DOCSIS 3.1 modems, which had like some crazy fast speed they supported that like no provider offers anyways, but if the modem is out they might start doing some "free' upgrades into faster packages, like most companies are already doing.

Now remember with your own equipment if anything goes wrong, or you need tech support comcast is going to tell you to f-off and give no help at all, and if it dies your on your own for a replacement.

I have charter spectrum now, and their modem rental is free (We had charter like 3-4 years ago and their rental was $5/month for the modem, i bought a $50 Motorola surfboard cause the tech said their modem sucked anyways)

EDIT: Also is it really $10/month to rent the modem from comcast? I should take my old surfboard 2.0 up to my grandma, shes had comcast for like 10 years now and still using the original modem they gave her... and the original linksys wireless G router she bought.

hmm seems everyone is surprised that comcast charges $10/month for their modem wth.gif

why do i get the feeling that im the only one that they are charging for the modem then?? tongue.gif

also to clarify, i am not trying to "upgrade" by any means to a "better" modem by trying to get my own.

I just dislike how they charge $10/ month meaning $120 a year which can buy a great modem and even after 1 year it'll pay itself off.

as for the internet package, im not 100% sure what this means. but we are running on 105 down and 10 up. (was 50 down 10 up but apparently comcast doubled everyones sepeed, just found that out while im home for summer break)
and we MIGHT drop back down to 50 speed since we cant afford to pay so much for internet.

also what provider do u guys all use? we live in the seattle area and it seems like comcast is the only "decent" (i say decent cuz sounds like every ISP sucks) one to use

Ive lived out of city limits most of my life, in a small Mid-Missouri town. We just moved from a house with "Video-Direct" its wireless internet, acts like a giant wifi router in town, and the antenna on our house sent the signal to a cable modem, it was $60/month for 3/1

We moved last Friday, have Charter Spectrum now, 60/4 but ive seen it speedtest anywhere from 30/4 to 70/6.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/4375032097.png seems to be in the middle right now, but anything is better then what ive had in the past, fastest internet ive ever had at home.

Sorry for the delay.

When Comcast had you swap out your old modem, it was probably because it was outdated (likely DOCSIS 2.0), and they upgraded you to the 3.0 version.

Until they start offering DOCSIS 3.1 or higher, any 3.0 modem on their list is fine.

The reason for it being on their list is that 99.9% of the time (that I've seen) the cable company does all of the firmware updating on the modem itself. You won't need to do anything.

If at any time you decide to upgrade to a better modem (when one comes out), as long as it's on their list it will be the same process: Buy the modem, call them up, hook it up.

By the way, I'm not shocked that Comcast charges you an extra $10/mo. That's pretty standard for any cable company when you rent hardware from them (you get charged for your digital cable boxes as well).
