If they are claiming that 4GB is actually what they're going to do and that they can work around it they're going to have to prove it with actual testing before I actually believe it.

Joe Macri did close our discussion mentioning that while what we see here with Gen I HBM is shown with four stacks of DRAM, it could possibly go higher as production methods of HBM became more precise

reading that, you can see they plan to add more capacity.

everyday i see news about the 300 Series i am more glad i didn't wait for it. for 380$ i got 2 X 290X and for 160$ i got blocks and backplates for them.. that's total of 540$... If DX 12 is half what it's promised to be.. i'm set till the 400 Series on shelves.

What's their source? It says in the translation:

"Allegedly to vBulletin, it looks like AMD puts the plans and do not use the famous graphics processor Fiji for the regular 300 series. Instead, the lavish circuit be the basis for one or more "halo products", that is quite unique creations whose chief purpose is to create attention."

That was a whole lot of nothing new. Not even a proper confirmation of whether we'll see 8 GB Fiji or not. I guess AMD really wants to drum up the upcoming release hard. You'd think it's going to be something really special, and it better be, because if the end result is just a water-cooled card with Titan X perf and 4 GB VRAM it would be rather disappointing unless it was sold for $500. It's great if they can optimize the memory utilization, and personally I don't think 4K really requires more than 4 GB at this time (W3 for example uses less than 3 GB at 4K), but I think after the Titan X release the enthusiasts have gone a bit cuckoo about how much VRAM they think they need. So it's a perception and marketing issue for AMD even if the reality of it is that 4 GB is more than enough and makes a lot more sense than stuffing the board with moar VRAM like it's mobile GPU marketing 101.

So much back and forth about whether it'll be 8GB or not. I don't see any evidence that AMD stepping away from their tradition of the memory getting increased with every generation. There's been a lot of wild speculation on either side of it, but just speculation, while snippets of information that we get from AMD directly show that they're gunning hard for 8GB.

Add to that they won the design over Nvidia's HMC, and as the loser Nvidia cannot enter until gen 2 of HBM and not because they wanted to wait it out lol.

Well, that would line up with the $849 price rumor. Now all we need is WCCF to put those two rumors together into a "confirmed" story for us. I'll expect to see that posted tomorrow.

I'm sure they'll manage just like they did jumping on GDDR after AMD pushed that standard along too.

Looks like Peter Gillingham and Brue Millar from Mosaid Technologoes Inc. will be making a ton of money off of HBM. After all, they are the inventors and patent holders. thumb.gif
