I haven't heard anything about 4k in a while, to be honest. All of their recent talk has been about VR.

Color compression helps bandwidth, though, not actual capacity. The textures, etc, still take the same space in VRAM, they just compress the data between VRAM and the GPU so less bandwidth is needed. With HBM bandwidth isn't a problem, but capacity could be.

The Radeon R9 285 introduced something called: "Lossless Delta Color Compression." The Radeon R9 285 with a 256-bit memory bus matched the performance, and in some cases a little faster, than the AMD Radeon R9 280 which has the same GPU specs, but a faster 384-bit memory bus. AMD's Delta Color Compression allowed the R9 285 with a narrower bus to perform like that of a wider 384-bit memory bus.

Unless they've changed something.

This is what you get with a duopoly, collusion, and high barriers of entry into the market. Let's face it, AMD and Nvidia know they are the only games in town and no one else can even ENTER the market to compete with them. What they are doing is not only unethical, it's illegal in many places and yet no one has stopped them or even tried to.

Yeah, I discovered you can skip a whole generation of video card and still get uber enjoyment from your PC.

Let's see, replace my $400 290 I've had since launch with a $850 card that will be no more than 50% more powerful, sounds like New Math to me.

See you on the flip side AMD,.. maybe. Then again, maybe not.

First you have to prove it. Fact is, they've been stuck at 28nm for years and the node hit maturity a long time ago, but die sizes keep going up. There isn't much they can do to cut prices off the GPU die. Add in the fact that HBM is a newer stacked die that doesn't have the economy of scale of GDDR5, and the multi-die on interposer technique used with Fiji is new. There's a reason why this could be very expensive.

That's the only reason those companies are not being charged by the FTC. They're probably smart enough not to email or call each other. But look at the release schedule and price increases.

The one where AMD's been behind in releases every cycle and hemorrhaging market share? Uh-huh.

Well I hope they have a trick up their sleeves if true. I just don't see a 4GB card selling that well unless it is half the cost of a Titan X. Or HBM somehow makes vram capacity pointless.

I thought the 285 was worse than the 280X though? That's what I remember seeing a while ago. And the 280X only had 3 GB IIRC.
