[FUD] AMD Fiji aims at $849 retail price - Page 14

What NVIDIA card would you have recommended in the fall of 2013? I would like to know how I could have better spend $400 on a card.

PS: My very first post in this thread states clearly I am not buying 390@$850

"IF" having the highest performance puts money in Nvidia's pocket, and gets them great market share, why would AMD not attempt to do the same in their Financial position? Really. This is past wanting to appease their GPU fans, I'm thinking they are fighting to stay alive. Sorry to be blunt but, to hell with our sentiment on the matter. The market will decide if a product hits a ceiling like it or not.

TITAN Z fiasco, recent example of the market taking care of itself regardless of opinions on the matter. It was way overpriced and the actions (or lack) of buyers took care of it.

I'm surprised not one person here mentioned AMD is not exactly swimming in cash compared to their debt. They need a WIN, and now. They cannot afford to leave money on the table. To put out a budget price on a card that AMD fans have been literally starving for? Madness. They should get what they can for the card in the timeframe they can get it in.

It's worse if they get in really bad straights and we only have Nvidia...yikes.

But when we all take a breath, step back from the madness that is high end GPU's, none of this makes sense for any one of us really, as a $300 class GPU from either vendor can play every game out there pretty well in normal HD resolutions etc.... However that doesn't bode well for us that are crazy, yes you and me that have surround, 1440, 2560, 4K, 120hz refresh etc... Yes we can stop here, we are nuts, and there's no making it all sensible, because it is not. and won't ever be. So why in the world do we even try to ask the gods for some semblance of parity...Why? Why?.../slap stop crying, man up and buy what you can afford, and stop giving these companies your tears. :D :lachen:

And drink, makes it all better...

Would this mean that the Titan X won't drop in price either then? Especially if it doesn't beat the Titan X?

It depends on what you already had. I typically don't upgrade unless I think the performance difference is large enough or if there's another specific reason.

That said, I changed from a GTX 580 (initially bought open box and then sold off to an OCN user) to a HD7950 in fall 2013. The 7950 was $230 to $250 with the Never Settle gold promotion through Q3 and Q4 2013. I got mine for $235.39 in September. The reason I switched was because at the time Nvidia had no method of consistently locking a color profile in fullscreen games, whereas AMD cards are compatible with Powerstrip, which lets you enforce color profiles.

I'd say the 7950 was the best deal at the time.

There is no reason for Titan X to drop. I will have more vRAM and non SLI Titan X owners to sell + most people that wanted Titan X already have it.

If the performance matches and mostly beats the Titan X, then $850 is a valid release price for the market. If NVidia releases a cheaper, but roughly equivalent performing, GTX 980 Ti, the price will adjust accordingly.

We (everyone) needs AMD to be a strong high-end competitor! AMD has lost too much market share in the discrete GPU market and NVidia is capitalizing on the lack of high-end competition. This is how the world works. Nvidia has much deeper pockets than AMD, and they use continue to use that leverage to push AMD around as much as they can and charge higher premiums in the process. Again, this is how companies operate!

If this high price means that AMD can legitimately outperform the highest end GPU from NVidia, then we all win in the long term.

The reality is that we've been stuck on the 28nm fab tech for twice as long as we should have been. The fact that we will have new 14/16 nm rollouts from both NV and AMD next year, both using HBMv2 (at that point), means the high premium on these cards probably won't last as long.

Also, go VR!!* I have been wanting virtual reality since I was a kid (as most any tech geek). These cards and the next few generations will help make that actually come true. (and Oculus and Valve/HTC, etc)

*there were many rumored code names for the dual GPU version of Fiji as Fiji VR, and the LiquidVR extensions gave Valve nearly double the framerate (https://youtu.be/JO7G38_pxU4)

Itt: fine for nvidia to charge 1k for a titan but not amd for a card as fast.

In another email between Dan Vivoli of Nvidia and Dave Orton of ATI, Dan wrote:

"I really think we should work harder together on the marketing front. As you and I have talked about, even though we are competitors, we have the common goal of making our category a well positioned, respected playing field. $5 and $8 stocks are the result of no respect."

"Both of us have spent the last three years trying to bring the perceived value of our products up to the level of Intel. The "GPU" category is clean and has served us well that way. We both have increased the price of our high end product several fold over the last 4 years while Intel’s high end prices have more than halved. Creating another category serves to work contradictory to that. How does one cleanly position it versus a GPU and a CPU?? It will tear down what we have both built."
