GTX 980 is nothing more than a mid-range video card now... nowhere near high-end.

If you take a look at the latest demanding games - GTA V and Witcher 3 benchmarks, you notice GTX 980 is not performing all that well @ only 1080p with most settings on Ultra, some AA, but some settings reduced (like GTA V's Grass Quality that brings down even Titan X). Its nowhere near a high-end videocard now. Witcher 3 @ 1080p @ Ultra + HBAO+ HairWorks gets about 45fps on average. The same can be said about GTA V, not to mention that GTA V has huge framerate variance.

For 1440p, GTX 980 is practically a bare minimum..

This really sucks. You either have to cash out $1000 on Titan X or stick with mid-range videocard like GTX 980 (970 too I guess). The jump is GPU speed demand in these games is rather sudden. GTX 780 at this point is entry-gaming card. Its hard to believe that just 2 months ago, GTX 980 was somewhat of a high-end card, but not anymore...

to be quite honest, I was disappointed with the launch of 970s and 980s of back tracking ( as they did with those 680s I believe?) I had upgraded from a 5870 to a 780 in awaits for a 980 because of the earlier years of the ( huge bump in performance with Maxwell) made me really sad lol, my 780 has been killing it as far as 1440p and somewhat on 4k on BF4 on all ultra settings. isn't that sad? Paid 550$ for that bad boy too.

when did a 980 became a high end card ?
Even with SLI, I can't even truly max GTA V (as in high res shadows + extended draw distance sliders).

Hate constantly getting caught between true high end releases.... Made the same mistake with the 680..

well, imo 980 is mid-range, though upper mid one...
since it compete w/ competitor's high end, nVidia price it in the upper-end redface.gif

With some of these new titles I think the performance is carefully engineered for maximum hardware sales. You are not supposed to max them.
It's easy to see the marketing wheels in motion, moving product is the goal not maxing anything.
Enter next BS console port AAA title which will be forgotten in 3 weeks.

It was the highest-end card up until Titan X arrived. Then it became a mid-range card. Another thing that sucks is that nVidia is forcing you to get Titan X because GTX 980 Ti will be released all the way in September, so those who wish to get a high-end card for a little less than the highest-end card (Titan X) are screwed with mid-range GTX 980!

Not now, but you were SUPPOSED to max them before Titan X arrived as long as you had a decent CPU.

Like I said in earlier post, it JUST became mid-range, right after Titan X came out. It created a HUGE performance gap between GTX 980 and itself.

Idk, maybe when it was the fastest single GPU card on the market.
