What do you think a high end video card is? And why exactly do you not believe a 980 classifies as one?

Whether NVIDIA or AMD have something much much better up their sleeve about to be released doesn't change how hardware out today compares to other available hardware.

No, the most important aspect of GTX 980 is the 4GB of VRAM that is VITAL to games like GTA V and Middle Earth - Shadow of Mordor and several others. 4GB of VRAM is the minimum or at least a standard these days.

lets ignore the fact these can easily hit between 1500-1600 Mhz core and 8000Mhz vram up to par with titan X for half the price.
Also DX12 right around the corner

The problem with games mentioned especially GTA V is DX11 when handing CPU drawcalls DX12 should make massive improvement.
Hopefully GTA V gets a proper DX12 patch like they did with L.A. Noire with DX11.

WHAT? Even the best overclocked GTX 980 will not get anywhere close to TItan X stock!

As I said, with hairworks I had 50fps. As for the vegetation, that was the 3rd option from the bottom in graphics menu. Got it to high from ultra, and there were no visible changes to anything.. except for that 20fps boost.

So you're saying that the Titans, 290X, and the 980s aren't high end because GTA V and SoM maxed out use a lot of VRAM?
I would like to know what you consider high end.

I'm almost certain that if it exists, it isn't out yet, or it's not available to consumers for use in a typical desktop PC.

Sounds to me like the intended settings for players who want to "Max" the game out will be whatever setting comes before the extended ones, and the extended one would be for the people who want to take it further as an alternative to editing .INI files or installing mods to enable that.

Are the extended sliders hidden in "Advanced Settings" or need something like a checkbox to use or are they immediately available right next to the other options?

In Minecraft the maximum view distance is 16 chunks. With OptiFine you can drag the slider further all the way to 32.

With a render distance of 1 you load the chunk you're standing in plus one extra in each direction in a square. So,a distance of 1 is 3x3 for 9 total chunks rendered.
With 4 that's 25 total chunks.
With 16 that's 289 total chunks.
With 32 that's 1089 total chunks.

As you can see the numbers go up incredibly fast. With a game that has some scene complexity unlike MC, I'd imagine the performance hit would be pretty severe. Especially if cars and AI are also loaded within the visible distance rather than having their own specific setting.

How is your performance with the highest non-extended draw distance and everything else maxxed?
What about with your draw distance at the extended max with shadows off? Is that playable?
Correct, it's GTA V's advanced settings I'm referring to. In there, you have options like; High Resolution shadows, Extended view distance and extended shadow distance (or something to that effect). High res shadows are a killer I found (I keep it off)..

My performance without any of the 'advanced settings' but everything else ultra/maxed + 2x msaa at 1440p is decent (80+ in city, and usually 50+ in countryside). Though I usually run with the advanced view distances at about 25%, high res shadows off and it runs pretty well, with rare dips to high 40s in certain parts of the countryside.

Maxed view distances in the advanced section are not playable for me, even with high res shadows off.

Eh, GTA5 is very flexible with it's settings, it's not hard to keep the fps higher if you want to. I've found that this is one of the best looking games without aa, the engine renders pretty well on it's own.. I have a 780ti @ 1202Mhz and run very high settings 1080p with no advanced settings on and no aa and I get minimum fps of 90 in the countryside and hit my 120hz refresh cap in the city.

High fps is important for combat in GTA Online, the mouse gets really laggy when it dips down. I'd much rather be able to aim really well all the time then run AA.. I don't really notice the crawling effect either in this game without it which is a first I think for me.

They've redone the rendering engine in minecraft in 1.8, it can natively do 32 chunk now and only renders the bits of the chunk you see or are about to see. It used to render everything even the caves underground on just one core, which was why it needed so much cpu. It still renders every tile entity in the chunks you have active though (even behind you), and servers default to only sending you 10 chunk distance worth of info.

A 980 at 1440p might not be able to max games with all the ridiculous settings that make no difference, true. But calling a bare minimum at 1440p is actually the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time. I can max GTA V (no MSAA) with my 970 and probably get like 45-50 fps minimum. Turn down the things that make absolutely no difference in this resolution and I can easily get 60fps minimum. Games have just gotten better at adding in ridiculous amounts of Anti-Aliasing and Multisampling so people with huge e-peens can use them and feel good about themselves

Its nowhere near a high-end videocard now. Witcher 3 @ 1080p @ Ultra + HBAO+ HairWorks gets about 45fps on average. The same can be said about GTA V, not to mention that GTA V has huge framerate variance.

For 1440p, GTX 980 is practically a bare minimum..

This really sucks. You either have to cash out $1000 on Titan X or stick with mid-range videocard like GTX 980 (970 too I guess). The jump is GPU speed demand in these games is rather sudden. GTX 780 at this point is entry-gaming card. Its hard to believe that just 2 months ago, GTX 980 was somewhat of a high-end card, but not anymore...

we should wait for the 980Ti and see how it works
i wanted to upgrade my entire rig and monitor to make it a 1440p 144hz gaming beast
but from im reading latley it might be a waste

im not sure its realy possible...we realy need something strong but in reasonable price

if the 980GTX having trouble runs the witcher 3/GTA V its a shame!

btw maybe AMD will suprise me this year with the 390X so i also consider this one : )

I disagree, I see settings like advanced graphics in GTA V and HairWorks in TW3 as "extra" , a game can be "maxed out" even with these settings off IMO.
I understand you might not feel like you are maxing out a game without these settings but honestly so many settings make no difference.
