I would like to know what you consider high end.

I'm almost certain that if it exists, it isn't out yet, or it's not available to consumers for use in a typical desktop PC.

No, I am saying 4GB is the minimum these days, which means GTX 980, 290X, and Titans are fine in regards to vRAM, but GTX 780's and 780 TI's are not that fine. GTX 780 series is highly limited by vRAM, which prevents them from maxing out graphics in games like GTA V and Middle Earth - Shadows of Mordor. Right now there is only ONE High-end card - Titan X, then we have upper mid-range card - GTX 980, but only IF overclocked, otherwise its mid-mid-range @ stock clocks. Then we have R9 290X - mid-mid-range. After that we have GTX 970, which is lower mid-range card, even if overclocked, mostly due to 3.5GB limitations and 290 goes into the same category. After that we have GTX 780 and 780 Ti which are BARE minimum. I rated 290 and 290X above 780 series because they have 4GB vRAM, making them more future-proof, even though they are slightly slower than GTX 780 series.

I saw no difference in gameplay on 780 Ti and 980. People are overreacting when it comes to VRAM these days.

This. I've never had framerate nor frametime issues on any game yet, and I have plenty of games that utilize all my VRAM.

I also think 1080p is still the norm for most "casual" PC gamers out there, and for that a 980 will pretty much max everything. Things get more complicated on 1440p and higher of course, but that's to be expected.

The 980 is a mid range card, even though it's been out for 6 months and there is really only one card faster?

Yeah, I guess every ATI product would be budget bottom of the barrel then seeing how everything is just rebadged older gen.

It's asinine to argue ludicrous tier structure semantics. Really. 980 is still high end compared to what is currently on the shelves.

GTX980 was never a fast GPU. Just a sidegrade from GTX780 Ti. Basically we have had GTX980 like performance since Titan OG if you dont count recent Kepler nerfs.

Riiiight, so how did you manage to run GTA V at mostly Ultra settings that require 3.8GB of vRAM to run?

My two 4GB GTX680's are OK for 1080p gaming and that's exactly what I bought them for.
But now I have a 4K monitor I don't think any of the current cards are suitable for decent framerates at 4K.
I play Metro LL, Crysis 3 & 2 with DX11 & HI-RES texture packs and I'm waiting for dual cards that will give me at least 60 FPS without $2K outlay.
I think the main problem is AMD & nVidia are still stuck on 28nm process technology and when they go down to 14nm then we will see big improvements towards 4K gaming.

"Come-on AMD, we need you to push nVidia".

See, my point here is even my old 760 managed to run RAM demanding games without problems. Advanced Warfare? But hey, it needed nearly 8GB VRAM. How come my 2GB GPU managed that? I saw no difference in performance on 780 Ti/980 at 1440p. Shadow of mordor - 780 Ti & 980 have nearly same performance (both dip/rise in fps sometimes).

What a joke, the gtx 980 is still a high end card.

The only reference to games it can't max out are a measly two titles.

If GTAV was easy to max out everyone would claim it's using dated graphics and whinge.
