Hello all!

Im not where to post this and I have had success in the past with forum members helping me.

So some background.

I have an ubuntu server running on vmware esxi 5.5 at my jobs datacenter.

My boss wanted me to set it up so we can watch old movies on our down time.

so I can see the server and all its movies locally but I cant publish the server.

i opened up the ports as follow using ufw

Status: active

To Action From
--
----
[ 1] 22 ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 2] 32400/tcp ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 3] 32400/udp ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 4] 32410/udp ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 5] 32412/udp ALLOW IN Anywhere

[13] 32414/udp (v6) ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6)
[14] 1900/udp (v6) ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6)

I even opened up the ports on my sonicwall but when I tunnel in and open up the 127.0.0.1:32400/web to try to publish it, it fails always.

fyi - Im a windows admin and Ive been working with linux for the past 6 months so im not an expert.

EDIT: let me know if you guys need more information or want me to run any commands. I figured I would start with the ubuntu firewall first.

make sure that's nothing using that port. Use netstat -a and take a look at your listeners to see.

So ill be honest. I am not 100% sure how to read this.

ill attempt a try at this.

so the servers ip is 10.176.2.17

i can see here that the local address 10.176.2.17 on port 34574 has a connection established on port 32400.

EDIT: I have also for the time being taken the sonicwall out of the equation by allowing all connections from WAN to LAN (not very safe but for testing)
Code:
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State

The ubuntu server i am running does not have a GUI installed.

In order to open the web portal I have been tunneling in so I can see server options.

I do this from putty on a windows 7 machine.

EDIT:

i do have a console into it from vsphere so installing a gui would not be out of the question. I just chose a CLI enviroment so i didnt have to deal with the overhead of a unnecessary gui.

Yes I have had it working fine before with a centOS7 server but experience very bad performance.

I need to tunnel so I can hit the local host 127.0.0.1:32400/web so I can see server options. If i go by server ip 10.176.2.17:32400/web I do not get server options.

Also would it be worth mentioning that the hosts are on a different network then the office(meaning Different IP from the ISP)? I have a VPN set up with my sonicwalls.

Ill see if I can get a device on the same network and access it by IP.

You should just be able to logon to the VPN and then browse to the GUI there, no?

Yes you are correct on that.

Weird for the hell of it I rebooted the server and when it came back up I was able to get server options by hitting the servers IP.

Still cant get it to publish

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out if this is a Linux issue or a general network issue. I have pretty much opened up my sonicwall so nothing is being blocked there

If you can access Plex by the servers LAN IP then the issue has nothing to do with the server. You would look at the router/firewall next to be able to access it from the WAN.
