Probably look for used 290s or 290x locally (i.e. craigslist, eBay, etc.)

You can for sure get a used R9 290 for under $200, Im probably going to list my 290x for around $225 in a couple weeks if an IRL buddy doesn't buy my entire rig as a whole.

Could probably talk someone who is looking for a quick sale into $200 on their 290x.

I don't know if you have ever bought used, but I have, 3 times, and burned every time. Now I know many here have bought used with no problems, but my personal experience is stay away from used. For new in that price range your looking at the R9 285 or GTX 960.

what resolution and games will you be playing?

it seems for $200, your only options are what others have recommended, which should be plenty for the above average user. .

Lol, me and you have opposite experiences. I only get faulty GPUs when I buy new. The last 6 or so GPUs I bought have all been used (2-290s, 670. 660ti, 2-460s) and all have worked like charms. The two new cards I bought (2-660tis) were both DOA.

Anyways, OP, I would recommend looking into getting a used 290 (see if you can test it before buying it/buy it with paypal or ebay). Not sure if you will find anything close to the performance for the money aside from a good deal on a used 290x.

I just went from a 560ti to a 960. I wanted the 970 but I couldn't afford it at the moment. The 960 is fine for 1080p if you are ok with 2GB RAM. Of course AMD is a better bang for the buck, they're just not as efficient and get way hotter.

I admit, ill be bummed if that 960ti/965 ever comes out. Supposedly a stripped down 970, not the same 960 chip. Showed up on benchmarks with the 980fi. I'd be all over a card between the 960 and 970 with 3GB vRAM for ~$250...
