I get around 5 hours, 6 if I'm lucky, definitely not 9 hours though (it will depend on usage, although with around 50% brightness, chrome and a few other things open I average 5 hours). It charges rather quickly though and the charger is magnetic.

You aren't going to get a long battery life on Surface Pro tablet. That is how bad the Windows handle with its battery life.
Of course, with a free Windows 10 upgrade, I am assuming it will improve it a lot.
There are multiple ways to manage your battery life.
I would suggest watching Sean Ong video on YouTube.
He is the like the best guy when finding tips and tricks on Surface tablet like he did with Surface 2 when there were a lot of hates toward it.
Thanks to his video. It does improve other people opinions but not a lot.

Make sure you check out one of his video about the ultimate student guide. When I saw that, I was blown away on how much you can do with it.

Well, since you aren't going to game or run Photoshop or whatever. I think you can settle with Surface 3 or Surface Pro 3 i3 version.

I did hear a rumor that Microsoft will announce Surface Pro 4 on this month, so we can wait and see if not probably Summer.

i'm not gonna need it til September comes. and even thn i can manage with my old macbook. i don't consider myself as a heavy user. im getting this sort of as a notebook replacer basically, since i go through 2-3 spiral notebook per semester for one subject alone. i'm absolutely convinced its not news paper that kills trees, its mathematicians and physicists.

if the 4 is coming out very soon i think i'll just wait and see. even with the heavy discount i rather spend good money since i consider it as investment and i don't upgrade unless i really have to. as you can tell from my sig rig lol

True. Then again, do you really need all of those unnecessary performance for just taking notes?
I mean I would understand if you do plan to use it for other things but oh well.

For me, I would love it if I could buy SP3 with i5/8GB/256GB. Too bad, it is too pricey, so I might settle with i3/4GB/64GB just for taking notes.

honestly i would take the i3 model if it means better battery, but its only 200 bucks cheaper and the better the hardware the more future proof. but at this point ti seems even the i3 model doesn't have good battery life.

What do you think about the Samsung Tab S2?

It seems we have the same requirements and I also want a tablet in the next few months. Note taking is probably the most important thing I'll be doing, I too want to get away from multiple notebooks.

i saw one of my classmate using it thats why i throw it into the equation, however it seems the surface pro is the real winner here, except the battery life. i'm hoping the surface pro 4 will address that problem since broadwell requires no fans as seen in the new macbook.
