4690k safe voltages and settings not to mess with

Hello. I got a 4690k last week and I'm getting a Macho Rev. B tomorrow to OC the cpu. Well it's my first intel chip since the P4 I had back in 2006 which I only OC'ed using FSB. So needless to say I'm pretty scared of messing with the wrong settings.

I read the haswell OC thread completely and took a few notes. However what I saw wasn't mentioned is much of anything about safe voltages. I mean every voltage setting. For example, why do I need uncore, Pll voltage settings and any other besides core voltage and raising the multiplier like an AMD chip? Those are just examples.

If someone could just tell me the only options to change for CPU overclocking that would be awesome and to also let me know what to not go over or under. I am not asking for specific settings like "hurr what voltage do I set my cpu to for X.Xghz? durr". I just want to know the only settings I should be messing with for a stable O.C. I have a lot of experience overclocking AMD chips and got 5.0ghz on a 6300. I just don't know squat about Intel overclocking.

That said, I just came from AMD so I look in my bios and it's scary to me. I read the guide but it seems like mainly a guide for people that are used to Intel chips but just new to haswell. While I am new to Intel and haswell. So I have basically no experience with Intel so please help me out before I fry my chip. The only thing I remember from OC'ing my pentium 4 is using my PLL to increase my FSB and that was through setfsb software. So if someone could make a list of settings that are the only ones I should be changing and what not to go over for each one that would be extremely helpful. Or if there's a guide for people new to intel oveclocking that'd be cool too as long as it answers my above questions.

Motherboard: GA-Z97x gaming 5.

Under 1.3Core V is safe voltage. Over is dangerous or need a great watercooled system.

You can use the multi adjust and leave PLL and all that jaz.

Is there any other settings to mess with that you need to mess with for OC'ing intel chips? Literally the only settings I know from AMD overclocking is raise multi and core voltage and turn cpu power settings off. That's it. Every other setting is foreign to me in intel setups.

Is there a guide for complete intel overclocking noobs somewhere? That will describe just the settings needed for overclocking the cpu and what to not go over?

lachen.gif Just go to the Haswell overclocking guide like you did once you start messing with the Multi and whatnot. You may need to worry about C states in the Advanced CPU settings if it comes down to that.

You can also enable an XMP profile for the Ram if you want to run them at Native Settings.

Just mess with your multiplier and Core V (You might have to put Settings on Manual if You see that Option in the BIOS)

if you are familiar with amd overclocking like you said you should be at least famiiar with pre-haswell intel stuff because it's practically the same. fix stock volages, fix bus speed, disabled energy saving features, raise multiplier.
whats special with haswell that they have the voltage regulator build in which means there is a input voltage besides all other voltages. what you need to know about the input voltage that it has to be at least 400mv higher than the vcore. whats also important to know that the loadline calibration only works on the input voltage, not on vcore anymore.

I digress. Stock input Voltage for most Haswell chips are 1.8 Input Voltage (Not to be confused with Core V )

When running clocks higher than 4.4GHz + and using more than 1.2Core V you may need to up the Input Votlage to 1.9 + Never to exceed 2.2Input Voltage.

Update:

Holy crap!
I got to 4.6ghz last night on a macho rev B. Hitting 90c in intel burn test, got 10 passes which is good enough for me. Can't get to 4.7ghz without hitting 100c and causing some kind of failure. For 4.6ghz I already require 1.28-1.3v which I've read isn't that good for this chip. However I basically used the cpu upgrade option and brought down the voltage, tried messing with the uncore but it only gives me 0.6 of a gflop in intel burn test and causes instability so it isn't worth it for me. Starting to wonder if my thermal paste application is wrong since the macho rev B is supposed to out perform an h80i and even be on par/close to an h100 if your case air flow is setup perfectly. Hitting 90c is a pretty weird thing for me since I'm used to AMD but 1.3v is probably the cause.

I then re did the settings last night without any help from performance upgrade features, got a solid 4.6ghz and a very close 4.7ghz but it requires above 1.38v or maybe I'm not doing something right.


These are the only settings I changed.
messed with Vcore
tried high LLC, LLC really doesn't seem to give any benefits for me.
uncore at auto which is 35
Multi at 47 for the 4.7ghz try
power saving settings disabled
Didn't mess with spread spectrum or base clock, all that jaz is auto
I did not change input voltage. Is that why I cannot go above 4.6ghz?


If anyone has some advice that'd be great. If not, I'm honestly happy with 4.6ghz. GTA V at 1440p maxed out never goes below 60fps now and if anything I get an avg of 70fps even during a crowded city street while driving fast in a car with a speed hack. It's insane, usually that would make me drop to 45fps. I'm seriously shocked.
