Increasing Pagefile - Advice to Improve GTA V Stability

Thread Starter
I've been experiencing a common crash in GTA V and was recommended I increase my pagefile to 8GB min, 16GB max. Can anyone offer a second opinion on this? I've been doing a little reading on pagefiling, but with the many schools of thought out there on the matter I've found myself confused.

The error I'm experiencing is this:

As I said, it's a very common crash that many with varying systems are experiencing. I have attempted multiple different solutions, but nothing has worked. I believe it is down to Rockstar, but others say it is something I can resolve myself.

My system:

4670K @ 4.4Ghz - I will try removing CPU overclock
4x4GB DDR3 1866Mhz Dual Channel Kingston HyperX Fury - These are two sets of non-matching 2x4GB 1866 Fury RAM (I do not believe this would be an issue)
Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 with modified BIOS - I have tried removing my overclocks (it didn't work), but I will also try flashing the original BIOS

Have you tried to run the game in DX10 mode & see. Seems, some settings causing this crash in DX11. Also, found this thread on GTA forums

have you tried this yet seems it might be the cause of the issue

This may have already been suggested as the thread is pretty long now - but on the slim chance that this helps someone I decided to post it. It's worked for me so far...
The error which you mentioned in your comment "ERRD3DGFX_INIT" is mainly caused by the conflict between your graphics card and your DirectX version due to which the game crashes as soon as you attempt to play.
We do have a couple of troubleshooting steps which we request you to try and let us know if it resolved your issue:
Workaround 1
1. Navigate to GTA V installation folder
2. Move the two files on desktop (just in case for backup) or delete : d3dcsx46.dll and d3dcompiler46.dll
3. Repair the installation
4. Launch the game with directX 11
5. In-game pause menu, go to Settings> Graphics
6. Turn off "Ignore Suggested Limits".
Workaround 2
1. Go to: Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V
2. Open the file settings.xml with notepad.
3. Hit Ctrl+F, a search box will appear, type "dx" (without quotes) and hit Enter.
3. Navigate to:
4. Change the value from "1" to "0". Don't change anything else.
5. Save the file, exit notepad and restart the game.

I got that from a search thru thread suggested before.

I'm not reverting to DirectX 10, but I'll have a look through that thread. There are many threads on other forums I'm following, however no one is able to find a definitive solution, which is why I believe is down to Rockstar and nVidia (or AMD and Intel, obviously, depending on what graphics processor you're using).

Thanks. The first method is a new one to me. I haven't heard that one yet. I'll try it after I've fully tested the stock BIOS that I've reflashed.

Workaround 2, I believe, is basically just swapping from DirectX 11 to 10. I'm not doing that. I might be wrong, though.

Np I hope you don't think I have come off to abbrassive recently wasn't my intention but yeah I have not really had any issues with GTA V in 60hours or so of gameplay I have had like 3 crashes and each was due to me running on windows10 insider preview I did however get a few lockups again I believe is windows10 here because I get it here and there on other games also I will be swapping back to win 7 very soon just tired of these weird qwarks with win10.

I like you, man. You are only trying to help people out. But yes, you can be abrasive. I think we all can. wink.gif

I've had two days of no crashes since reflashing the original BIOS. I'll test it for a further week and then chalk it up to a (very mild) overclock that wasn't stable. That doesn't explain the dozens of others who did not have any additional overclocks, but if it works for me, great.

The game just crashed. Stock BIOS and no overclocks might have helped, but the problem is still present. I will try increasing my pagefile now. Any advice on it would be really cool. According to Windows, I'm already using 16GB of pagefile, and it recommends 24GB.

Interesting I don't have a page file and I haven't experienced any crashing, but I guess everyone system is different. Are you using the latest nvidia driver?

yeah it is always recomended to run same amount of pagefile as amount of ram as you have installed for minimum and double that for maximum.

I also read do not have a + power input leave it bone stock in your drivers and such so don't do +% of power this is also known to cause issues with the GTX 970 / GTX 980 on GTA V.

yeah the ones mainly having the issue are GTX 900 maxwell cards even though the game is built on the Nvidia gameworks and specifically desinged for GTX 900 / titan X cards AKA 2nd gen maxwell same goes for witcher 3 and witcher 3 is having same issues over Nvidia gameworks and the keplar and prior Nvidia cards are now being gimped thru Nvidia gameworks which is a bit dirty if you ask me.

The point is likely the main problem isn't GTA V itself but Nvidia gameworks so it likely isn't a GTA V issue nor is it a witcher 3 issue it is a Nvidia gameworks issue just wanted to point that out 2 completely different major game DEV's on 2 different engines with same issue both using Nvidia gameworks is pretty telling.
