[Eurogamer] CD Projekt tackles The Witcher 3 downgrade issue head on - Page 16

During development, sometime after the ballyhooed 2013 trailer, CDPR faced a fork in the road and had two basic choices:

A. Reduce the scope of the game (size, length, open-world) and keep the visuals as-is so it can be developed for the different platforms individually.

B. Keep the scope of the game and adjust the visuals accordingly, focusing the entire team on the game and not splitting them up into different platform groups.

This is all based on the fact that the game was going to come to PC and consoles from the start. Consoles deserve no fault here. With them and their massive profit potential CDPR was able to make the game as they promised in terms of scope. That this came with the sacrifice, i.e. choice B, of toning down stuff like smoke is the choice I would've taken.

It could very easily be the other way and we could all be complaining that they didn't give us the open world or the that the game was too short or there weren't enough quests.

They chose design over graphics. It's that simple. I don't see a conspiracy.

I don't think it's unreasonable to believe them when they say that without consoles they wouldn't have had the budget to manage a game of this scope. Comparing this to Star Citizen is not fair; this wasn't a crowd-sourced game. Compare it to something similar in scope like Final Fantasy XV, which is something like 10 years in the making, a development team of way more people than Witcher 3, comes from a developer with massive experience (this is CDPR's third game), and is only going to two platforms so far.

CDPR made Witcher 3 for three platforms, had a smaller team size, has less experience as a company making games than SE has on one single title, and made a game that has over a hundred hours of gameplay in less than three years. And in my honest opinion it looks good, too.

I don't say that to defend CDPR because if you keep on drumming that they lied to you or committed fraud, I'm afraid your mind was made up long ago. I also don't think CDPR is entirely without fault--they should have addressed this earlier on or put a disclaimer on their earlier trailers and avoided most of this PR disaster.

But I do think they deserve credit for admitting in this interview that they made a mistake and will do something to make up for it.

This is very well said. As I've been saying all along - CDPR didn't do anything wrong in what they did with the game. And anyone who thinks they did something wrong with the game doesn't understand game development and is just mad that their own expectations (which they, not CDPR, are responsible for) for graphics were not met.

But the beauty of the PC is that you can adjust the settings to match the performance you want. But apparently they took that option away from PC gamers and just said "too bad if you have 4 titan x's you still have to have downgraded visuals" even though they could have just left them in the game.....

If you want it to look like the original footage then you need 4 titan X's. If you want it to look like it does right now then you only need a gtx 970. Makes sense to me. Why waste time REMOVING assets THAT ALREADY EXISTED when you could have just left them in the game for people with the right specs.

Why so demanding then?
The 2013 should of been the fps today

YouTube compression?
Not seen ultra yet?

All the defence, but failed, what you see on YouTube is what you get.

I remember seeing those. I also remember people questioning what that meant and getting those previous answers I listed.

Honestly seems like that as the company grew from a small team to over 200 several departments were saying multiple different things. They probably dont know how to handle all the public facing cogs yet. Its not an excuse just realism as I myself work for a large company that often has multiple departments claiming contradictory information

And where exactly in any of that do they talk about the game looking noticeably worse with completely downgraded effects compared to everything they had shown at that point? Just saying that they basically had to conform with consoles doesn't say anything about them downgrading every aspect of the graphics.

So what you quoted doesn't really matter compared to what happened. Saying that PC won't look dramatically different from consoles doesn't = the graphics and effects are dramtically different from all the footage and screenshots we've released so far.

Pessimist

pes·si·mism (pĕs′ə-mĭz′əm)
n.
1. A tendency to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view: "We have seen too much defeatism, too much pessimism, too much of a negative approach" (Margo Jones).
2. The doctrine or belief that this is the worst of all possible worlds and that all things ultimately tend toward evil.
3. The doctrine or belief that the evil in the world outweighs the good.

Now please do stop talking, nobody wants to dissect your ignorance any more. Every time I've taken the time to reply to your posts you come back with a two word retort. Because nothing you've said is constructive. Every time someone has taken the time to make a constructive well laid out opinion you've retorted with nothing but 'bait and switch' and compared the game to completely incomprehensible comparisons from previous games in different genres.

I am so glad I did not buy it. I would have it, if it was released on Linux as it originally had the sticker (in Steam) and then took it away. So glad I dont worry about this no more now that I only use Linux.

Ahhhhhhh so we're to blame and not CDPR with all the claims of no downgrades and "even better graphics" and all the screenshots and video they released that they never said weren't the end results until AFTER the game came out. Our fault for having trust in what was thought to be a trust worthy developer.

Seems legit.

Oh what a shame, I wanted to know what your opinion was on tackling draw call limits within constant buffers moving to an open world game engine.

Doubt you know anything about that anyway.
