[Eurogamer] CD Projekt tackles The Witcher 3 downgrade issue head on - Page 8

Thanks for sharing how much you like to support corporations and your attempt to rub other people's face in it while calling their views "meaningless," as though your view somehow then matters given that logic.

Meanwhile, in the real world there are a LOT of PC gamers who are pretty dissatisfied with the state of PC gaming. You clearly stand for the status quo. People with that attitude have been making the world a better place for millennia.

IF CDPR were as big as R* then yes they would of been able to make 2 serperate versions, but this isn't the case.
The gameplay and the story are fantastic but it's a visual downgrade especialy the grass that i can't stand, for CDPR i understand why they had to do that cause :
1- consoles are their major revenue
2- like workthis said they haven't the same budget as R* or EA
3- it's very difficult to apply 2013 trailer graphics in an open world at the scale of TW3
for me CDPR are still good devs i like their free drm policy but in future titles ( cyberpunk ) i hope they show real stuff and not fool people with false trailers.

After the cash-in from pre-order and launch day sales they finally tell the truth. Better late than never I guess.

Sounds like a scapegoat to me to avoid getting sued/anger bitterness. If the PC wasn't a priority why bother even releasing a port for it? Why all the 4k nonsense and "hairwork" crap? hairworks was useless anyway, but my point is none of this makes sense. Why bother show casing the 4k video? Why say that PC is the "lead platform" and then make console the lead platform...Why show case "PC screenshots after screenshot after screenshot; not to mention the press the PC version got .It just doesn't add up. Sorry, but I still feel that people have been robbed of their hard earned money and are settling for a botched version of the game. Why can't a lot of people on this forum see this? It's so obvious.

The annoying this is that is very reason why this practice will continue because people don't care that they are being taken advantage of and being screwed. Well, most people here anyway. A few people can see that they got screwed over though. To those that are are okay by this botched version let me ask you this. A lot of you have spent a lot of money after your rigs and this game, so why are you guys settling for mediocre?

One doesn't go car shopping expecting a Austin Martin only to settle for a Kia unless they have completely broken expectations.

Before the launch I thought this game would look great, but my opinion did a complete 180 on this and I can't trust these guys.
Console parity will continue to exist for however long the life cycle of the console is and PC hardware will be dragged down with it. This is the reality. PC gamers as I mentioned in the other thread are all alpha testers for consoles. NVIDIA and AMD use early tech that is broken from the start to make their games look slightly better on PC but run like horse crap on an expensive piece of hardware because hey got to keep that dollar churning over and pick on enthusiasts who have a lot of cash to burn. thumb.gif

No one forced them to do open-world. If they kept it like W2, they might have been able to pull off 2013 graphics.

They wanted open-world, they wanted to expand big-time into console market. Don't let companies make you think something is "impossible." They don't do certain things because they try to make the most money. It's only "impossible" when there is a simpler way to make more money.

They were obviously let down with the PS4 and X1 specs... imho, the only good thing about the consoles is that they have 8 GB of RAM and use dx11/12.

I think people need to take the bitter taste out of their mouths regarding the visual difference between the alpha footage and now, and address the following...

Firstly, and I'm going to stereotype here and it's by no means an insult. Developers for a large part work extremely hard. With the footage shown so early on I don't think CDRed were out to fool anybody. I think they took a genuine stance on what they thought was possible, and unfortunately it did not work out. Now some are arguing that this isn't the issue, and that they denied the allegations that they downgraded the game. What they did was compromise some of these effects because they had to during a lengthy development process. With any form of development, leave alone one as complex as a game of this magnitude - there will be a more than a few times where one will need to backtrack. If X+Y takes into account this calculation here, then removing the rows from here will minimise the time from Y to Z. Oh wait no I haven't accounted for if Z is still drawing W.

So in this case say one of those things effects the graphical fidelity on trees, or the grass. Ok so this isn't a step up, but it's going to improve the performance and we're working with what we have. As a developer your first instinct isn't going to be "well I guess we should point this out in our next press release, along with these changes since we showed people snippets from the alpha footage." It just doesn't work like that, and this doesn't mean they've sold out or they do not care. That is just not how (and I am stereotyping a little here but it is true for the most part) their train of thought works.

As consumers we are lucky enough to get any insight into a product that is not yet final - and nobody is forcibly making you buy a product that is quite clearly still in production. That is why we have journalists.

I think what CD have done in this statement is basically just forcibly made them say what most of us should have known from the off. A PC centric game just doesn't pay for itself in this market, and developing a game engine that performs and looks exceedingly better than it's counterparts within the same game engine with all the functionality and it's mechanics as it's console brother just isn't possible. If it is, I would love for you to show me a game that is all these things on the same scale as W3.

Yes it's a little disappointing, however the game still looks incredible and you are able to tweak settings if your PC is able to handle them. Frankly I tried tweaking some of the LOD, and it brought my system to it's knees.

To end, I think people should lay off the finger pointing. Without them there would be no Witcher or Witcher 3.

Consoles being blamed is a common scapegoat a lot of developers use, because it's a nice scapegoat a lot of people end up believing, and the blame and the hatred is transferred across to consoles. Nevertheless, the consoles are not to blame for the downgrade. If consoles were to blame, why are they giving away the game for free with GPUs? Why the 4k showcase? Why the proprietary technology? Why continue to push that the PC version is the best prior to release?

Is anyone here going to seriously argue that we are getting better games for PC now that most devs are making cross-platform games for PCs and consoles than we were back when Valve, Crytek, Dice, CD Projekt, etc. were making PC-only games?

IMO, absolutely not. I find the argument devs make about this really questionable. We got GREAT, enormous, comprehensive, intelligent PC games just 7-8 years ago... are we to believe that the PC game market has diminished so substantially since then that developers can no longer make these types of games without consoles?

Personally, if it's between the quality of PC games we used to get, and another generic, consolized, "AAA" shiny, simplified-for-consoles blockbuster game, I'd take the fewer-compromises PC game every time.

It has nothing to do with eating up what is told without questioning, it has to do wit common sense and knowledge about the game industry
And yes 8 years ago it was very different.

If they say that if the game would not be on console the game would not be on PC in a state like this what is to question about it?

Everyone knows making expensive games like this wont result in enough profit to make it just for the PC. How crap do u think the game would have looked if it was PC only??? And it looks like u are saying u prefer that while u make a fuzz about what has happened now??

This is how it is going to be, this is what changed in those 8 years that u maybe missed.

There will be gems like GTA V for PC, that just took 3 years longer than console release because yes its not a dumb port they made it AFTER console release piece for piece. If there was no GTA V on console there was no GTA V on PC (maybe top down shooter style or like miami hotline).

Would u have prefered TW3 for PC would have lauched 3 years after console release? (what is no option because cdprojekt does not have the resources to do that like rockstar).

PC only gaming nowadays is Early Acces DAYZ and so one.

Like i said.

Cold hard truth. Do i like it? No.

Don't get me wrong. I entirely agree with you. As a consumer I would definitely take the less profitiable and higher quality PC exclusive version of the Witcher 3. However, I'm not naive. I don't know what's with people placing CD Projekt RED on a pedestal. They're into the money making business, it just happens that to make their money, they make video games. They're not any better than EA or Microsoft, just smaller. They're gonna go where the money's at and after they've tasted that sweet console cash, they'll never go back to being PC-only developers.

The "well they're a business so of course they're going to go for the money" as some kind of attempt to excuse their actions is a non-starter argument.

Part of being a business also involves keeping customers happy by doing things customers like. What's happening here is the same as when a restaurant serves you a cheap, undercooked steak instead of the one pictured on the menu. You don't just say "oh well, they're a business and businesses are here to make money!" and gratefully eat whatever you're served and then pay for it + tip. You send that thing back and complain, and get what you were promised.
I'm not excusing this practice at all. I'm all for not supporting them. I feel like this is a slap in the face and shows complete disregard for the fan base that made they who they are today. I'll never buy a CD Projekt RED game again if they continue down that path. Thing is, I also understand the sole reason for this debacle was money. I didn't purchase the game, I got it for free with a GTX 970(that I promptly returned). If not for that, I would never spent a penny on it.

Developers making AAA games don't need PC to survive. Not when billions are made with consoles alone(GTA V and Destiny anyone?). PC gamers are and afterthought and second class citizens. You all better start accepting that. Simply don't support devs who you feel don't treat PC fairly.
