Now this is the kind of SFF that makes my eyes get all big

Worried about the lazy air taking the easy way round the heatsinks. Push pull 120mms on the sinks would solve that. Also like the Xeon idea with the restricted column of cooling.

Very cool idea, especially with the interlocking heatsinks, just a few things I'd want to add:

Wouldn't the PSU at the bottom block a lot of airflow? May it be a better idea to place it vertically like the other components?
How will you get the GPU I/O to the "back" of the case? Are there plugs that are flat enough?

Ah and I love the first rendering with the plexiglass sign! thumb.gif

Re-rendered with a pair of Silverstone Heligion HE01 Heatsinks that I made in Sketchup last night that Doyll recommended. They don't lose much in Cooling efficiency to the Noctua D14's but interlock straight out of the box without the need to bend heatpipes. Also remembered the idea I had for another proposed build that utilised a server 1U PSU. Fits in unused space to one side of the cylinder and reduces height even more. Back to 250mm in Diameter and down to 315mm in Height.

That mod is what gave me the idea in the first place! biggrin.gif

First one used a MITX board with Low powered Haswell and integrated graphics and pico PSU. Its cool because it replicates the look and form factor of the mac Pro. Its incredibly cool and that goes without saying. That said, I basically have the same PC internals in a much smaller case myself.

Specs in sig. Its my bedroom PC and is what I've been doing my sketchup modeling and rendering on. My family have euphemistically called it 'The M*********n-Station' biggrin.gif

The second mac pro mod goes a bit further with bigger CPU heatsink and PCIE extender and discrete GPU. Again, another cool mod.

I felt, that if I was to attempt something similar I had to try and make it unique in its own way. I decided to see if I could build something much more powerful and overclockable and as small as possible and as quiet as possible. Hence big ass heatsinks. Hence the interlocking twin tower heatsink idea. I'll have achieved my goal if the fans run low RPM and virtually silent most of the time and only ramp up and get louder when gaming in VR when I'll be wearing headphones anyway.

Not sure if I said it in this thread or the other but I'm not totally wedded to the pure cylinder form factor either. Might try a Hexagon faceted enclosure design. With regard to trying to replicate the Mac Pro design, its not so much a 'Me Too!!' thing about the external looks as the idea of packing as much power as possible into the smallest most efficient volume as possible outside the normal case form factors. Maybe once I have the internal configuration sorted I'll go with a hexagon enclosure like I said. Maybe with a hexagon frame with discrete cut acrylic panels bolted on. Maybe with a single piece of acrylic heat molded into the hexagon shape.. I'll probably end up spending more time on research into the enclosure and methods of building it than I will have for the internals.

Hexagon is out, as is octogon. Even a Deca'whatsit would require increasing the diametre. biggrin.gif Cylinder it is. The trashcan beside me is the perfect diametre at 10 inches. Drawing the height with a marker on the side really helps to visualise the size of the thing in real life.

All the mobo/GPU/PSU connections on the bottom is fine as its not like its a big unwieldy case I'd have to lift/tilt to plug and unplug cables. Also means nice clean unbroken lines all the way round and no cutting openings in the cylinder. The trashcan I have is literally perfect once I'd trim the height. biggrin.gif

I can't help but wonder if you can get the dimensions down closer to the actual Mac Pro. It is 6.6" in diameter but you need to fit a standard ITX board so 7" would have to do. An alternative is to put it inside a G4 Power Mac Cube enclosure although that would limit you to small form factor graphics cards. This will require you to get more creative with the mobo and GPU placement. For instance it might require running the riser cable around the bottom of the mobo and bring it back to have the GPU components face towards the top of the mobo.

I'll probably consider a similar idea once I have a new job for a while again. It won't be cylinder shaped, though. I want to salvage an old G4 cube but they usually tend to cost more than even the G5 aluminum cases since the used market mostly has G4 cubes with all the components still working inside.
