[valuewalk] Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) Bankrupt By 2020?

Quote:
We contend that Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) one of Silicon Valley’s semiconductor success stories, will file for bankruptcy by 2020. Since 2008, this legacy company has survived by slashing operating expenses, spinning off its manufacturing business and transitioning away from its core PC business to “growth markets”. While it may be succeeding in marketing its turnaround narrative to the market, we see ADM at a point of no return. We identify a toxic combination comprising an uncompetitive product portfolio, technological leap forwards by competitors, several structural challenges, poor positioning due to an ineffective strategy and a worsening balance sheet. While it is bagging some wins, the clock is ticking and AMD will be unable to drive profitability in industries where product leadership, rather than merely pricing, determines success.

Didn't read the pdf yet. But it reminds me of
http://www.overclock.net/t/579295/the-business-insider-ten-big-companies-that-could-go-bankrupt-amd-on-list

I see a takeover more possible than a bankruptcy.

What do you think?

Only idiots would state this without waiting to see how the 16 and 17 product stacks look. It has been known for years now at this point that big changes would happen around that time period.

They do have a point, but it's a bit of a gamble to bet on it given that they will reboot the CPU business side next year; let's wait for that.

There was another news yesterday that does link with this one and makes you think if they aren't up to something: http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/amd-x86-license-agreement-with-intel-cannot-block-our-merger-or-acquisition/

This is if nothing new in the industry had changed for AMD

that pdf was tagged for 2014, and since then we are seeing that AMD has announced new arch new nm and also new technologies that.. well until are brought out we wont know how they perform but are so far looking promising...

this sounds like the same hype we have been hearing for quite some time.

2020 ? Wow its is ridiculous to try and ''predict'' that sort of outcome for a time frame that in all honesty is a long way away in terms of business, I have seen companies make a huge turnaround in less time, sure AMD has had its troubles and needs to improve some areas but I feel for the moment this is somewhat click bait.

clickbait article if i have ever seen one.

who knows, the 390x could be such an amazing hit that it gets them out of the red, or something else could do that later on too.

I could see it happening. On a surprise level from 1 to 9 , where 1 is not surprised at all .... i give it a 3. They have been struggling with their next gen stuff. Their was something recently about the fabrication stuff, the reuse of last years tech for this year, the overstocked issue. Then you follow their stock where it just looks bad ... winning the bid for the XBone and PS4 was huge, but when the CEO stepped down (at least around that time) , and their financial report to follow lost all the traction they gained from the console.

I have it in my head that they are at least 1 year behind intel, and perhaps 6months behind Nvidia. People can argue this, its just my opinion.... it's really impossible to compare them... __CompA__ does better than __CompB__ on __CalculationX__, but worse on __CalculationY__. ___GAMEA___ runs better on AMD, while ___GAMEB___ runs better on Nvidia. I feel they are trying to optimize their current tech instead of investing into R&D for the next tech. Optimization works... but it's more of a short term gain. I feel they are just overclocking the CPU or just adding more GPUs to thier graphics cards just increasing the power requirements and heat.

I really do hope they can get back on track. Without competition, companies don't push themselves. .... but there is also the small chance that development gets a lot easier because people don't need to program for different architectures (simplistically put).

If AMD continues on the financial path they have been on since 2007, they will be bankrupt by 2011.
