I'm 45 minutes in to AIDA 64 without Memory testing. Could memory have caused the display flashing though?

I notice when I reboot the Windforce light goes out on the card for a second, could be the slot power cycling, I never paid attention in my other PC. I used the Windforce 970 card I have for a week or so in my other PC without any issues, I never stressed it though, watched some movies, played a few minutes of an Arkham game.

Arg! I hate gremlins!

The same thing happens with my G1 Gaming so I would assume that is normal shortly prior to boot.

Additionally to the skeleton boot I would clear CMOS in case you have some corrupt data in your bios after your OC attempts. UEFI bios seems to be a little more fiddly than the older clasic BIOS setups.

I cleared CMOS using the jumper as soon as I started having the flicker problems in the BIOS last night. I still had flicker problems afterwards, but I haven't seen them again today.

I'm at 2+ hours testing the CPU, FPU, Cache (but not System Memory) with default BIOS values, no issues so far.

I think it might be bad memory, but could memory really cause display flickering? Seems unlikely?

What program should I use to test the memory? I'd like something that would read every byte and tell me if something is wrong. Ideas?

(I have Newegg Premier, so I went ahead and ordered another board and some G.Skill memory, just in case).

Sorry to hear about the hiccups. Probably the 970 is fine. Memtest86 checks each and every byte of system memory. I've used that before, but it passed so i never had to drill into what was failing. Might be tricky to pin down whether its the mobo or one of the dimms and which dimm or mobo slot. Maybe optimistically memtest them all at once, but if there's a failure start trying one at a time in different slots.

Memtest should do the trick yeah. I don't see how RAM could cause flickering either to be honest. It sounds to me like either the monitor or the GPU. It could be something as simple as one of your GPU power leads was not making proper contact. I really do not envy you, there is nothing worse than an intermittent problem on a new build. Just keep testing each component in turn and hope that it was either a bad connection or that the problem will repeat an allow you to find and correct the cause. If the memory passes then try stressing the GPU for a few hours with something like MSI kombustor or the Heaven benchmark on loop.

I'm at 19+ hours on memtest86. So far so good. (32GB take awhile I guess).

Its so weird though. I had no video issues in the previous build (same Corsair HX1050 PSU). I also didn't have the issue before I OC'd. The problem remained after I cleared CMOS, and did it even in the BIOS! Then even reverted to stock, the next day the flashing stopped but AIDA64 would crash and shut the pc off. After unchecking 'system memory' AIDA64 had no trouble. I've been running memtest without a hiccup. I dunno....

Next will be trying AIDA64 with system memory again, then stress testing the gpu itself. I'm using the main PSU leads this time, in the last PC I was using the Modular cables for the PCIE power, that shouldn't make a difference, but I'll try putting that back if it hiccups again.

What will really bug me is if the problem goes away or I can't figure it out. I have a very hard time believing the Board is bad.

Ah the joys of troubleshooting. Sometimes its something silly like a poor connection, other times its an impossible to find intermittent fault. I would rule everything out then stress the entire system for 12 hours and see how it fares. If you pass a 12 hour stress test once it is all up and running again you should be golden. If you are not running through a UPS it may also be possible that your power at the wall could have been high or low at the time the problem arose, I have had that problem myself a few times. Days of troubleshooting only to discover that my power was unstable and outside the thresholds of my PSU's power correction. The flickering could also have been a bad connection on the monitor lead or interference from another device. I recently purchased a new screen for my daughter's PC and it was flickering right out of the box, after testing 3 different cables, buying and installing a new PSU (figured the GPU may not be getting enough voltage) it turned out to be the sub from the 2.1 speakers was causing interference and moving it under the desk resolved the damned flickering....

Good luck, I hope the problem either manifests clearly or turns out to have been a connection somewhere wink.gif

Memtest86 came back good after 26 hours or so. I rebooted and ran AIDA64 again at stock speeds and everything was fine. I OC'd to 4.5Ghz and AIDA64 was fine for 2 hours. After I shut it off everything was fine. Rebooted and did it again. Test ran again for 45 minutes or so. Shut the test off and the monitor started flashing again. When it flashes the screen will go into standby and come back. Sometimes it will shut off and not turn back on. I have this on my test bench and the monitor is a 1024x768 LCD with a analog connector. I'm using the DVI adapter. I switched adapters just to check and it still did it. I plugged in a DVI panel and the problem has went away.

What the heck!

AIDA64 isn't crashing the computer anymore and the DVI panel isn't flashing. I know nothing is wrong with the analog panel. I haven't really changed anything. I'll be using this on 2 DP panels and HDMI out to my home theater, but I'd still like to know what the heck is going on?

Have you checked your system event logs? There may be some clue there as to what is going on.
