Brief Question about Original Titan performance vs Modern Cards

Hello, i'm just looking for some basic information if anyone is able to help me out. I've tried searching a lot but there don't seem to really be too many comparisons of modern GPUS directly against the original GTX Titan. I'm trying to decide between $240~ on a 960 branded GPU after tax/shipping with 2 GB of VRAM against one of the original GTX Titans (not the black, X or Z models) for $300 which comes equipped with the older non-maxwell architecture.

Things I know already : 2GB Vram vs 6GB. I'm playing on 1080P so either option will work for me, thus Vram isn't much of a factor. TDP of the 960 sits at around 150, vs 250 for the titan, so higher power consumption on the newer tech, not really an issue - i got a stronger PSU than I needed to and it will easily support either card with plenty of overhead. More than likely less heat, etc when using the 960 but thermal conditions wont affect me too much. My supporting hardware (cpu, memory, etc) shouldn't bottleneck either card at my desired resolution.

So, it basically comes down to this : Which card performs better when the difference in VRAM is not a factor? I have not been able to find any real tangible information on this topic, and on Nvidia's website they at best provide a chart comparing GPUS in an application like 3dmark (is it called firemark now? whatever) and thats just not enough information for me to decide which to get.

Thanks in advance if anyone is willing to give me some information.

There is a chart that compares the 960 and Titan vs a Titan X across a wide range of games.

The Titan is faster.

I know you think the Vram won't matter but a lot of new games are showing it will. Even at 1080p.

Thanks for the link, it appears the 960 is rougly 20% slower than the original titan when compared to the top end cards at 1080P, but relative to each other, it appears the original titan is 40%~ faster than the 960.

That's a pretty big leap in performance, despite the Titan being a much older single GPU card, i'm surprised - that or skipping the 8xx series cards approach at marketing has worked on me in making me consider the 960 where I may otherwise have not.

Games nowadays can easily grab up to 4GB of RAM, so I would hate to have 2GB as an option.

The OG Titan OC's also...clock for clock, not much different from an 780ti/Titan Black..

Thats pretty interesting. I didn't realize the original titan matched up to the 780TI/Black models if they hit the same clocks, i was under the impression they were much newer cards with better tech/more cores.

Because the base clock is so low, when benched at stock, it doesn't fair too well. it's to the 780ti/Titan Black what the 980ti will be to the Titan X...or, something like that...Titan Black/780ti/Titan/780...You'll hear some that says it is a dog, those guys obviously never had one, they are going by stock bench results..

A Titan for $300?

and it's that or the GTX 960?

geez, I thought this was an easy one.headscratch.gif

It doesn't look that great for Kepler as of late, but Nvidia finally acknowledged the unoptimized drivers and hopefully soon we'll see GK110 back where she belongs!
