Quote:AdBlock Plus has successfully defended itself in court for the second time in five weeks.
The service prevents ads from appearing on websites unless it has given them permission to be displayed.
German broadcasters RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 had argued that browser plug-in was anti-competitive and threatened their ability to offer users content for "free".
However, a court in Munich ruled in favour of AdBlock's owner Eyeo.
SourceThe firm says its PC browser plug-in has been downloaded about 400 million times.
It also recently released a version for Android-powered devices that it says has been downloaded more than 220,000 times, and it promises an iOS version soon.
However, as part of its ruling the court in Munich said that too few people were using Eyeo's products for it to be judged to have a "dominant" position that might justify an antitrust intervention.
why? abp is the greatest thing that has ever happened to the internet.
As a youtube content creator, APB has been strangling revenue (polls done show 92% of all users are unaware of the white list feature or how ad revenue impacts creators) as well as extorting money out of companies to be put on their white list. Youtube is working on a paid ad free subscription service, but I have serious doubts about users wanting to pay for youtube related content. Thankfuly at least patreon is doing great for me as my fans support me (i do animation).
I call that unintended consequences of a good service, and if you have to stop making content, well that's your problem for trying to do something without a clear marketing pathway or investors for a living.Originally Posted by clerick

What are you talking about? There is a clear pathway with youtube, users are simply just choosing to pirate around it (malware/viruses on youtube? lets be serious, it won't ever get through their filters, stop using that excuse). If you hate ads then I have no problem with you not watching my content because its ad supported. However i do not want users to be able to watch my content by skipping around it with adblock, and I hope google continues their work in killing adblockers on their sites.Originally Posted by Zen00

The service of a virus/malware/adware/annoyance free internet is worth far more to me than your animations at this point, sadly that it is so.
Yea, those kinds of ads really need to stop, they do nothing but annoy everyone.Originally Posted by Dragoic
Or websides could just start not showing useless ads that burn users eyes from their sockets.
If i ruled the world and could choose what ads that could be shown. Then ads should ONLY be a logo. No auto play of short clips. No animations. No sound. Nothing at all, only a logo.
This I can respect, and if more people did this there wouldn't be problems for CC.
Comparing this to piracy is disingenuous at best. In fact blocking ads or skipping them completely (i.e. DVR) has been repeatedly upheld as lawful.Originally Posted by clerick

I remember back in the good old days when users uploaded stuff to YouTube simply because they wanted to show something to other people in the world. None of this "Im a YT content creator for a career" crap you disgusting people do these days. If people like you and the corporations stopped stuffing ads down everyone's throat at every opportunity in an attempt to squeeze people for every last bit of money then we wouldn't have this issue of everyone wanting to block every ad possible.Originally Posted by clerick

It's been handy on OCN at least two times now where OCN has gotten malicious ads.

Arghhh Matey we shall sail the 7 seas of ad free youtube.. The British crown will never stop us! The booty will be glorious
Not that you have provided much of an argument to begin with. Calling abp users pirates is ignorance and laughable. Just because your paycheck relies on something people hate doesn't mean we are the bad guys. Maybe you should stop relying on ads to bring in money and actually make something people would be willing to pay for instead.
way off base. listen i feel for you, you gotta make a living, but your anger is directed at the symptumn of the problem, not the cause. I'll give you a hint. you're going to need to direct your wrath at the advertisers. Why the advertisers? here are three reasons why.Originally Posted by clerick

Ads with auto-play, bandwidth hogging, full sound videos are one of the primary reasons I use ABP now, loading a browser with 50+ tabs after rebooting your computer can be the funnest game of who's that noisy around. :/Originally Posted by Shrak

This is my one and only concern with ads. I don't care that ads are being displayed under a couple of circumstances;
- They're regularly scanned for malicious code ( it's sad that they really aren't unless someone reports them ).
- No automatically playing audio or video, this one is a two-way problem
- Bandwidth: for those of us on a monitored network.
- Audio: for those of us who keep our speakers on, the last thing we want is a full blast surprise.
- They don't alter the experience of the site, this includes full screen and/or pop up ads.
Along with those, those of us here with an 'overclocked' account have the option to turn ads off anyways.
To be put simply, if you want to display something on my computer, you need to make sure it's safe. And with security it's guilty until proven innocent, period. You don't wait to get infected then do something about it, you prevent it from happening altogether. And it's been proven multiple times that these ad companies don't do anything about it until they become a problem.
