AdBlock Plus has successfully defended itself in court for the second time in five weeks.
The service prevents ads from appearing on websites unless it has given them permission to be displayed.
German broadcasters RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 had argued that browser plug-in was anti-competitive and threatened their ability to offer users content for "free".
However, a court in Munich ruled in favour of AdBlock's owner Eyeo.
Quote:
The firm says its PC browser plug-in has been downloaded about 400 million times.
It also recently released a version for Android-powered devices that it says has been downloaded more than 220,000 times, and it promises an iOS version soon.
However, as part of its ruling the court in Munich said that too few people were using Eyeo's products for it to be judged to have a "dominant" position that might justify an antitrust intervention.

As a youtube content creator, APB has been strangling revenue (polls done show 92% of all users are unaware of the white list feature or how ad revenue impacts creators) as well as extorting money out of companies to be put on their white list. Youtube is working on a paid ad free subscription service, but I have serious doubts about users wanting to pay for youtube related content. Thankfuly at least patreon is doing great for me as my fans support me (i do animation).

I call that unintended consequences of a good service, and if you have to stop making content, well that's your problem for trying to do something without a clear marketing pathway or investors for a living.

The service of a virus/malware/adware/annoyance free internet is worth far more to me than your animations at this point, sadly that it is so.

What are you talking about? There is a clear pathway with youtube, users are simply just choosing to pirate around it (malware/viruses on youtube? lets be serious, it won't ever get through their filters, stop using that excuse). If you hate ads then I have no problem with you not watching my content because its ad supported. However i do not want users to be able to watch my content by skipping around it with adblock, and I hope google continues their work in killing adblockers on their sites.

Or websides could just start not showing useless ads that burn users eyes from their sockets.

If i ruled the world and could choose what ads that could be shown. Then ads should ONLY be a logo. No auto play of short clips. No animations. No sound. Nothing at all, only a logo.

I use adblock and it's deactivated for OCN,youtube, and Twitch

Yea, those kinds of ads really need to stop, they do nothing but annoy everyone.

This I can respect, and if more people did this there wouldn't be problems for CC.

Comparing this to piracy is disingenuous at best. In fact blocking ads or skipping them completely (i.e. DVR) has been repeatedly upheld as lawful.

I remember back in the good old days when users uploaded stuff to YouTube simply because they wanted to show something to other people in the world. None of this "Im a YT content creator for a career" crap you disgusting people do these days. If people like you and the corporations stopped stuffing ads down everyone's throat at every opportunity in an attempt to squeeze people for every last bit of money then we wouldn't have this issue of everyone wanting to block every ad possible.

I'm a content creator on youtube as well, but I use ABP cause it's great! All there is to it.

If you want to make money on youtube, get sponsors to cover your expenses till you're famous, or push for legislation to enable people to attempt to do so who aren't blessed with those things. (I'm all in favor of basic income, personally. edit: It just happens that a lot of good and useful/profitable ventures in today's world are high risk/high reward, so.)

It's been handy on OCN at least two times now where OCN has gotten malicious ads.

This is my one and only concern with ads. I don't care that ads are being displayed under a couple of circumstances;
  • They're regularly scanned for malicious code ( it's sad that they really aren't unless someone reports them ).
  • No automatically playing audio or video, this one is a two-way problem
    1. Bandwidth: for those of us on a monitored network.
    2. Audio: for those of us who keep our speakers on, the last thing we want is a full blast surprise.
  • They don't alter the experience of the site, this includes full screen and/or pop up ads.

Along with those, those of us here with an 'overclocked' account have the option to turn ads off anyways.

To be put simply, if you want to display something on my computer, you need to make sure it's safe. And with security it's guilty until proven innocent, period. You don't wait to get infected then do something about it, you prevent it from happening altogether. And it's been proven multiple times that these ad companies don't do anything about it until they become a problem.

LMAO IM A PIRATE BECAUSE I USE AN ADBLOCKER

I use adblock all the time, absolutely no reason not too.

Honestly how much do websites make off of ads? $.00001 per person who visits?

Heck if you want me to pay my 1 cent for the year for my ad blocking I would gladly mail it in to OCN.

Stop it, you, internet people with your funny internet jokes and internet impersonations.
I wonder if artistic integrity people care how "shallow" those ads that ruin videos are. It just trashes the experience and we only try to help them get more views. Something tells me youtube weighs that in their reimbursement protocol.

Not that you have provided much of an argument to begin with. Calling abp users pirates is ignorance and laughable. Just because your paycheck relies on something people hate doesn't mean we are the bad guys. Maybe you should stop relying on ads to bring in money and actually make something people would be willing to pay for instead.

I sure the hell would not support an ad based YT and don't feel remotely bad for any company or individual that despises users like me for blocking there invasive ads that serve no purpose for ME. The ads exist for you, not me. Therefore, I don't care.

way off base. listen i feel for you, you gotta make a living, but your anger is directed at the symptumn of the problem, not the cause. I'll give you a hint. you're going to need to direct your wrath at the advertisers. Why the advertisers? here are three reasons why.

VIRUS PREVENTION
Listen, if all ads were unobtrusive and safe the market for an adblocker would be non-existent. the problem is many ads are vehicles for viruses or adware (frankly i want to know why adware isn't criminalized). It would be the height of foolishness not to have an adblock software to protect yourself and make your web surfing safe.

BANDWIDTH CAPS
there are people with legit bandwidth caps out there, many websites are x4 to x5 the data download without an adblocker. that's money out of those people's pockets

PORN
I'm not a prude, but i simply don't need naked women bouncing across my screen when i have children over at my house and i'm reading an article about some game they want, or i'm looking for reviews on the newest piece of computer hardware. I've been using an adblocker for so long (decade + ) when i see the net without one i'm often shocked at the seemingly benign websites with perfectly normal content i go to, which have naked women splayed out all over the place in the banner ads.

I'd say those are 3 steller reasons why you need to look at the ADVERTISERS and vent your wrath. they created a highly toxic and unsafe environment on the web, it's not our fault if we chose to surf the web in a containment suit. In fact to not do so is foolish by my book.

Ads with auto-play, bandwidth hogging, full sound videos are one of the primary reasons I use ABP now, loading a browser with 50+ tabs after rebooting your computer can be the funnest game of who's that noisy around. :/

if u want users to stop using adblocking, next time tell ur ads service provider to "choose a better less intrusive ads"
rolleyes.gif
nobody likes 15-30secs youtube ads. 5 sec is top I would tolerate

#25 ·
This is great news, I don't think I can go back to not using an adblock. The other day I was trying to watch a video on youtube, and a damn 30 seconds of non-skip ad started playing. I swear the 30 seconds feels like an eternity, and just made my blood boils... I can stand it if I am watching a cable TV, but video ads on youtube / computer just seems out of place to me..
If your primary income comes from youtube content then sorry. You will just have to make do, or find another source of income....

I am sad to say there is no level higher of agreement that I can possibly attain for this true fact
