Power Supply for My PC Setup?

Thread Starter
PC Specs are below in Signature.

Anyways so my PC has been shutting down recently and I believe it's my Power Supply (3 years old, OCZ Z SERIES 850W 80 Plus Gold). Would you guys recommend getting a 1050W or should I just get another 850W? I've seen people say 750W is more than enough and others say 1000W is the minimum so I'm not sure what to get. All my parts are stock by the way, I might do a mild OC on my 290s later though.

Oh and temperatures are fine for all my parts (CPU, GPUs, VRMs, etc.), it only shuts down when my PC is being stressed a lot. For example: If I run furmark with CrossFireX enabled it shutdowns instantly but if I run it with it disabled it does not. It also shutdowns in TERA (almost instantly when I get in game, GPUs are 100% CPU is ~30%) and GTA 5 (after few hours, CPU usage ~70%, GPUs ~25-100%). DiRT Rally which doesn't use that much resources does not cause my PC to shutdown as well as other games so I believe my PSU is either failing or it can't handle all the stress.

I'm currently looking at the EVGA GS (Seasonic) and G2 (Superflower) Series but I'm leaning towards the GS Series because the G2 ones are a bit longer which might interfere with something in my case. Thanks in advance!

PSU Length will not be issue in 400R, I would go with the 1kw G2 since it is 167, though GS is same price...literally but Leadex is better. For sake of future upgrades

Since nothing is overclocked, your power consumption at worst is no more than about 600W. It's not 600W all the time, but I'd say that roughly 600W is the absolute peak of your power consumption in the absolute most demanding situations where the 290s and the 3770K are being worked extremely hard at the same time.

I remember the 850W Z Series being a fairly good PSU. You can replace it to see if it's the problem, but I have my doubts. If you do get a replacement, then just know that it doesn't have to be anything "bigger" than a good quality-made 750W PSU.

Forgot to say that I have my SSD mounted on the bottom of my 400R next to my PSU since I modded my case to put a 240mm radiator in the front so I might have to settle for the GS Series.

Hmm I think I'll try and go in the middle of your suggestions and go for the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 and see if it fixes my problem.

The 850W SuperNOVA GS Series PSU is very high-end unit too though. I'd say that comparing the 850W G2 to the GS is like splitting hairs.

I just ordered the 850W SuperNOVA G2 so I guess I'll update this thread (or should I make another thread?) if I still continue to have a problem. Oh and the G2 was only $8 more than the GS so I just went for the G2 since a lot people say they like SuperFlower based PSUs more than the Seasonic ones and it also has a 10 year warranty versus the 7 year on the GS. Thanks again!

Nice! :)

If it keeps shutting down after this upgrade (don't re-use any of the modular cables from the OCZ PSU, by the way), then it might be best to make a new thread in "Intel - General" because it would be an indication that something else is wrong - it might mean that it wasn't the PSU after all. The reason for putting it in "Intel - General" would be that it's an Intel system but we don't know what the culprit is.

I forgot to mention one "bad" thing I keep hearing about the SuperNOVA G2s: fan noise. I don't know if your power consumption will be high enough to make the fan become loud enough for you to hear, but it's possible. So, just be aware that there's a slight chance that this could happen. I haven't seen any complaints about fan noise for the 850W GS though.

Thanks for the heads up, I can easily return it if it bothers me and swap it for the GS. I have 4 XSPC + 1 CoolerMaster Sickleflow 120mm fans and a XSPC X2O 750 Bayres Water Pump I mean hopefully it isn't louder than those haha.

It shouldnt be louder than that. some people just tune into it but then those are generally those aiming for more silent machines, but like....I cannot hear my superflower at all at load for example (then again evga did use slightly cheaper fans)
