please I hope id and bethesda are letting the guys who made Doom 2016 remake the next wolfentstein game (with RtCW style mp)!!

Because it's Microsofts goal to spread FUD about any competition (OpenGL / Vulcan) to DirectX and Windows. If they control the market, they continue to get their monthly invoices wink.gif

I wouldn't put it behind Microsoft to do something like that, but the truth is most developers know how to develop under DirectX rather than OpenGL/Vulkan, and the resources required to train developers in order to develop for OpenGL/Vulkan probably does not seem worth it to the publisher.

True. However, this all started because Microsoft made the effort to get developers on board with DirectX back in the early 2000's. With such saturation in the market, it will take time to ween off it. But the evidence is clear. Even going forward with DX12, Microsoft is doing the same thing. Forcing users to either buy games from the Windows Store / have Windows 10.

It will take large developers like DICE with the BF series to really get the ball rolling. I mention them because of their install base and because they had mantle intergration before. Though, to my knowledge, they made the switch to DX12. Which is a shame. I wouldn't rip on DX12 or DX for that matter if it was the optimal platform and had dominance. However, we know Vulkan is excellent. If it doesn't get traction soon, it will most likely die off.

Honestly Vulkan only seems pretty amazing in DOOM and Mad Max on linux out of the 16 games that support it, but OpenGL on linux apparently really sucked for Mad Max and for DOOM AMD GPUs seemed to be the ones to benefit the most, depends on hardware configuration. The biggest overal advantage Vulkan has is support for more than just Windows 10, but lets face it, more than half of people gaming on PC (according to steam) already have Windows 10 and current Windows 7 users probably won't mind shelling out cash in order to play newer games with DX12.

I want Vulkan to take over and be the chosen API for the majority of titles, I just don't see it happening.

Come on, hating on Microsoft is so 2000's. If it weren't for Microsoft, you'd still only be able to play games specifically made for your particular CPU and GPU.
It is a bad thing that they don't allow Dx12 on older Windows, but truth is that everyone got so used to Microsoft's amazing care about backwards compatibility in the last 15 years, that they started taking it for granted, while simultaneously hating the company and its products for every performance problem, every bug, every inconsistent compatibility. You can't have it both ways. Backwards compatibility causes problems. You either have it as-is and don't complain, or you don't have it. Microsoft doesn't owe you or me anything, they can make their products compatible or incompatible with each other in any way want. And if I were in their place, I'd do the same.
That being said, in the last few years Microsoft took major steps to open up their platforms, and even ease the transition of their ecosystem onto Linux, with the open-source Linux-compatible .NET.
So yeah, time to change the tune, mate smile.gif

Vulkan is an awesome graphic API, but i guess will be forgotten very soon, sadly, because Micro$$$ only allows their DirectX, forcing PC gamers to use Windows 10. It's all about Micro$$$ business.

With Vulkan (or Mantle, before) games could run better on old hardware but Hardware companies have their business related to unoptimized software (games and APIs) so people think about upgrade more often to "stay at 60 fps".

If Vulkan become standard API, more games would run much better on higher FPS and more smooth even on old hardware so less people would upgrade their VGA every, let's say, 12-18 months.

Dx12 we all know is garbage but is good for gaming industry make unoptimized trash games that force PC gamers to upgrade more often.

Pure logic.

As mentioned previously, this has nothing to do with Microsoft trying to stop Vulkan, it's just naturally difficult for a new platform to establish itself, since game developers have 20 years of experience with DirectX and they choose to stick with what they know to avoid risks. It's the game studio's business model that does this, not Microsoft's.

I agree with some points. There is a huge benefit when the market is using a single, unified platform. As well, there are both pros and cons to that as we've mentioned.

There were fears, for good reason, that Windows 10/Store would become another GFWL. MS is still making exclusive DX12 games tied to their store that no one wants. Is it as bad? Hell no. Not even close.

Sure, I am coming off as a MS hater but there IS room for improvement and I am not just speaking here to hate. Vulkan certainly has shown its possible with current technology. I want it to succeed and not just for the sake of making DX12 better.

But look at this way... go back to 2013 when Mantle was initally hyped. We wouldn't have even see the improvements in DX12 if it wasn't for Mantle/Vulkan. So no, I won't praise MS yet. They're being reactive and not proactive.
