From what I can tell the 480 will at least be on par performance with the 390x and with less heat and less power draw so if you can wait for the 480. I bought a 390 a few months ago and I will be selling and getting the 480 or maybe even wait a bit to get a 490. I don't think the price is going to be crazy either but we don't know yet what the card will have in it. The AIB partner cards should be out vary soon for the 480.

When you decide that the fans on your XFX R9 390 DD just make way too much noise and you come up with a ghetto fix redface.gif Zip tied two Noctua Industrial PPC 120mm fans to the cooler. Well, that annoying noise has gone and temps are quite good too biggrin.gif Feast your eyes on this ungodly monstrosity. wink.gif

Upgraded from two water cooled 7970's@1200/1575 to two r9 390x's on air to hold me over until Vega drops. Spent a good portion of the weekend trying to cool them down while running very demanding games like crysis 3 and witcher 3 at 3200x1800 without AA. I took off the side of my case and added two 120mm fans to the side of the cards and they still would not run under 85 degrees in these two demanding games. I decided to reduce volts by .25 in afterburner and drop the clocks from 1080/1500 to 1000/1250, massive improvement with no impact on fps.

Results with Vysnc on

Witcher 3 at 3200x1800 hairworks off, ambient occlusion off, everything else on max
1080/1500 ~780 watts locked at 60fps ~90c
1000/1250 ~550 watt locked at 60fps ~ 75c

Crysis 3 3200x1800 Very High, Len Flare on, No AA
1080/1500 ~750watts locked at 60fps ~90c
1000/1250 ~550 watts locked at 60fps ~ 73c

BF4 3200x1800 Ultra, No AA
1080/1500 ~500 watts loc ked at 60fps ~73c
1000/1250 ~400watts locked at 60fps ~63c

Project Cars 3200x1800 all settings maxed, AA(SMAA Ultra) Thunderstorm
1080/1500 ~750 watts ~ 55fps ~90c
1000/1250 ~550 watts ~ 55fps ~ 75c

Undervolt harder. Im sure you should be able to shave another 30-60mv @ 1080mhz.

Totally! Those fans sound so noisy and are probably lowder than all your fans combined together in your system. I'm quite happy now smile.gif

Yeah lol. I'm forever uninstalling, reinstalling drivers, games etc. Everytime I get an AMD update I tweak it in sync. Sometimes I think it's my hobby in life. My last driver was great. I just installed a new one and it stutters in every game (this is with freesync on). I'll get it smooth as silk and download a new Crimson next month and do it over again. Sometimes I have to remove everything and start over. What I should do is stop installing every new AMD driver update that comes out. I just keep thinking each new Crimson update is better that the last so I download it. Once I took apart a card just to look at it. Threw some Artic #5 paste on it and bam! My temps dropped 10c. Pretty suprised at that.

So I guess this means CF scaling is not limited by clock speeds. What does that leave, CPU speed?

Not sure, but my cpu does not seem to be holding the cards back.
