[Official] AMD R9 390/390X Owners Club - Page 1115

wait, the 290x fan is cooler? is it the same with the 390/290 cards?

next question...will a 290x fan fit a 390 lol. I would assume yes, as it is almost the same card, but with some of the CU's disabled. I have 40/44. I CANT ulock the other 4, physically disabled rolleyes.gif
I always get the cards that have the potential to unlock, but physically cant. The only card that I owned that could be unlocked was my GeForce 5700 waaaay back in 2005. I think it was a 5700LE turned into a 5700 or 5700 Ultra...saved that money!

Whatever you do on your next upgrade don't buy the little "weaker" model and tell yourself "I Could Overclock it and smoke the better Model". This is what I thought over the years. Come to find out, no way in heck can the "weaker" model ever catch the "Best Model" of the series.

That's why I went 380X, 290X, 390X, RX 480. They are faster, so go for the beastliest card and reference I might add on your next purchase. They are the very most capable cards out there. Both Physically & Thermally. The blowers are Top-Notch performers when modded.

By the way, yes 290X fits the 390/ 390X as long as reference design PCB... Compare the PCB's... I use 290X reference blower on the 390X Reference... They are exactly the same cards. The 390X is just a finer tuned version is all. Able to use less power at idle and load.

For instance back when I bought my first GTX 470, I was all Nvidia at the time. I thought I'm probably as fast as the 480... Nope the 480 was a way way better card both thermally and physically... You could tell it was a finer card in the way it overclocked, it's thermals and straight up performance. I bought the 480 years later just to see what I had been missing out on. So yeah the "Best" model of the Series is so much better in every way, a finer build with more care and emphases to detail than the "Little" dumbed down weaker cards.

I would be stuck with an MSI AIB cooler then. I will look into that.

yeah, im at the point where just buying budget doesnt cut it. The 390 is nice, it drives a lot of games at 1440p at ultra pretty good.

I have spent 925 bucks on video cards since 2012. 5 years...900 plus freaking bucks. Know what I can buy for 700 that would probably easily last 5 years?

Know what I can buy for 400-450 used from a friend that would last the same?

I think I will go that route.

You make custom BIOS for the green team?

Yes sir sure do make custom bios for the Green Team. haha Tons of experience with the Green Team... Way more than AMD mind you wink.gif

I just took the AMD route this time... Running on flippin Fermi Power in 2016 hahaha ... I was going to go GTX 760 4GB for efficiency and just up and bought the 380X 4GB and boy was I happy dude... 4K VSR I was like this is so awesome from 1.5GB GTX 580 to 4GB 380X that I had totally gone scientific on the BIOS mastering of Tonga. That way I pulled the weakling power limited 1040mhz base to 1,250Mhz core DeLimited... Didn't have reference 380X and still don't and I still never saw what the 380X was truly all about... I hope one day a 380X Reference pops up on eBay with a beautifully attractive price of 99.99 with way more than 25 in stock... Because Reference is the way to go... Like I knew about Nvidia... Only on Reference Nvidia could the cards see clocks no others could see on air... Not including expensive water cooling spenders...

Yep haha I've said enough in this post haha wink.gif

VSR doesnt work on my card properly...mad.gif dang it AMD!

Far better hardware...doesnt support a simple thing. oh well.

Soon enough, I may be going with a 1070 or 1080...or hell, a 1080 Ti.

First image my own overclocking setup. 1150/1600 + 40v
Second one is of the 1186/1563 that you cooked up. It's not stable. I had to add more voltage. +60 in MSI afterburner. just an FYI, I know I was not supposed too. But I'm a mad man

The real kicker is, I almost bought the 380x, but my buddy talked me into getting the 390 over it. oh well.

To go with the 1080 my friend has, he has the FTW Hybrid mode...so got that going for me. Or for him...since he is waiting for 1080 Ti to have more cards on the market.

Hey guys!

Had to drive to Jersey and back, home now. Yes, stock bios with the OC done in MSI Afterburner. I'd like to min/max on performance while driving down voltage. Looking at THUMPer1's numbers, maybe I'm not tweaked right/ over-volting??

Here is my setup

GPU mod

Airflow Map (I have 2 fans as exhaust for the radiator)

That is an interesting fan set up. My mind says 3+4 should be intakes with 9+10 being outtakes for best results...but if it works it works.
