We have a very capable 1080p/60hz ultra everything card now for around $200 US that stays cool, is small, and can literally sip power when compared to the 290 series which first brought us that level of performance by AMD, but at a higher cost with fewer advantages.

While AMD hasnt been pushing the performance end of things lately, that doesnt mean they have not contributed greatly to the betterment of the market. GCN, HBM, APUs, Mantel/Vulcan, Relive, Wattman, and the new Chill software which looks promising (see video i linked earlier in thread) are all just a few things helping to move "pc gaming technology" forward by making it better or more accessible to everyday users.

exactly, AMD have contributed a lot by pushing tech, and I mean a lot, just like you said it

[Edit] Ok,I believe the vary last option under AMD COMPATIBILITY OPTIONS called "erase autosaved startup settings" is the setting you need to enable to get the Crimson/wattman bug that keeps MSI AB from working properly fixed. I had a heck of a time but managed to get it working and i am fairly confident this was what did the trick. Let me know.

I really wish we had full functionality for wattman as i would love to just use that, but since we dont and i know MSI AB pretty well now i just used that since i somehow seem to be the only one who has gotten Crimson and AB to play nice. Maybe we can change that. Let me know and good luck. thumb.gif

Then will i be able to use ab to tune my card or ill have to use wattman? Only reason i ask is because when i change voltage in wattman my pc crashes so hard with my new ryzen that i need to clear cmos to get it going again.

Dont touch wattman with a 10 foot pole. It is garbage in the condition non 400 and 500 series owners seem to inherit it. If it worked as intended id use it myself, but it's an insult they even enable such a half baked piece of trash as the "version" we 300 series and older get just doent work at all. Just use MSI AB if you can get it working.

The next step up from that would be to look into doing BIOS edits or having someone like Chris89 do them for you. That is the best option but it has its own issues.

Tried your fix and i have the same issue in ab as well, ab doesnt seem to black screen once pressing apply though. Tried changing core clock to 1100 and hit apply and it immediately goes back to 1040. Im on w10 creators btw if it makes any difference. Not sure whats going on, worked fine with 17.3.1 on wattman now both programs just reset.

You may want to try using a program like DDU to remove your drivers and then reinstall them. Make sure you go the safemode route when you do to ensure a clean scrub of old files that may be causing you issues. I had many problems with AB doing the same until one time it didnt. I canr for the life of me figure out exactly what i did to make it work but it did. Thought maybe it was enablong that setting. Idk now.

Oh def not using DDU thats for sure haha. This is a fresh windows install as well so i doubt theres stuff left over. The ab version is on my hdd and my os is on my ssd not sure if that matters.

I don't play games with it OCed its just annoying that this started happening after the fresh install. I may completely delete ab and then install it again but I've already tried that.

I was able to run wattman and afterburner(AB) together after a few months of tweaking. Basically I use wattman to set my clocks and afterburner to add voltage, what sucks is that you will have to follow the steps below whenever you decide to game with an overclock.

Please note this only works with the 17.3.3 drivers in my testing.

Step 1:
Use the 17.3.3 drivers/AB 430/river tuner v7.0

Step 2:
Set your core clocks in wattman and raise power limit to whatever level you consider safe, I have mines at +50. Don't touch your memory.

Step 3:
Raise vcore in AB to your desired level and hit accept then close the program. Whatever you do don't save any OC profiles in Afterburner.

Step 4:
Go back into wattman and make sure clocks and power limit did not reset. Reload settings if needed

Step 5:
Relaunch afterburner and check your wattman settings one more time. You should now be good to go.

Good Luck!

I heard a few months ago, guys going off about Wattman. Pretty scary. I think it had something to do with Afterburner not working with the update. Don't quote me, I've been avoiding later updates. I got mad last August because they didn't separate the card drivers and were still making one unified driver for all their cards. So I rolled back to the best known which was 16.5 and stayed there till 16.11.2 (hotfix for 16.11).
Well, somewhere in time, that changed (like they read my mind). They've been keeping drivers in respect to the cards which is a good thing. I don't want changes for an RX 480 that can't play something my 390x can. Even though the 390x will never access it, it's added 'stuff' to lug around like a still born twin attached to it's host. Heck, I got Office Professional 2016 to do that!smile.gif

Well, my systematic journey to test the lower limits of my 390x continues. As some of you are aware I am currently testing undervolted limits and performance.

As of last night I was able to drop my gpu core volts another couple points with no issues in performance benching. This in turn made my temps even better under full load for significant periods of time.

My current settings are +50% powerlimit, clocks are gpu1000mhz/mem1250mhz, and an offset of -50mv on the gpu core (down from -31mv). All other voltages are currently stock as MSI AB doesnt have the ability to manipulate memory voltage to chris89's suggested 888mv, and im not ready to mess with auxilary voltage yet.

This set up along with my custom fan profile keeps my 390x from ever breaking 69'C in even the most brutal stress testing...and in many many games i enjoy +60hz minimums at 1080p or 1440p with no artifacting and temps in the mid 50's. More testing is required before i deem this 100% stable on my platform, but inital testing was promising.

This is really the best way to utilize the 290/390 series imo, and if you havnt tried undervolting and playing with a cool quiet card at a frame capped 60fps, you should. You wont miss the extra 2 fps higher clocks net you...but you will love the lower heat and noise output.
