I installed them last night and hit 4GB of Vram usage on the desktop......and Mad Max was stuttering all over the place, back on the 15.7.1 drivers now and butter smooth smile.gif

I must admit I am kinda paranoid and that negatively affects my decision-making . So i wanted you guys advice. Btw this thread is really nice but it's also gigantic tongue.gif

The question would be: MSI R9 390 or Sapphire R9 390. Here are the facts I am taking into account:

I am not a huge performance freak but I want my R9 to be a long term vga, and therefore 5-10% performance difference could be a big deal. I should remember that Sapphire 390 has 1010 mhz base clock and is expected to overclock limit around 1125 mhz, and the MSI has base clock 1060 mhz and is expected to overclock limit around 1200 mhz.

However, I really don't like noisy/loud vgas, and I've heard some great comments about Sapphire 390 temperatures and noise, and some mixed comments about MSI 390 temps and noise, some people also reported to have weird high temperatures even on idle with the MSI one. I believe both cards do not have problems with coil whine, is this correct?

Another thing to be considered: I am not from the US, and the MSI 390 is 30 dollars more expensive than the Sapphire one. that would be around a 8% price difference.

So, what you guys think I should go for? thanks in advance to people willing to help a fool like me

If you really arent into a rather loud rig i think overclocking in itself is kinda problematic because you will always need a higher fan speed to comp the higher temps caused by increased clocks and/or energy consumption.

I cant complain about my Sapphire R9 390 but ideally i would want watercooling for a more silent setup and there are no matching wattercooling units for the Nitro (yet).
Thats something I regret about getting this card.

So i think it would be a better idea to just go with a card with reference design to avoid incompatibility with future upgrades.
Unless of course you dont want/need watercooling.

15.9 seems to have a massive memory leak, I randomly see 8gb usage in just desktop.

Yes, there is a memory leak in 15.9 drivers, every-time you resize a window. Rly bad. If you have MSI AfterBurner you can observe how it's filling up as you resize.

No most of the time i run stock. For newer games I'll do a decent OC but not max

XFX coil whine update: Got a second card to tryout, same problem. Maybe a PSU issue? Ran Witcher 3 overnight on OC, worked fine. Temps are good, but the high pitched noise can be annoying. Trying to break the card in if that's even a thing. Need to try some other games that will push the card, and try the old 15.7.1 driver.

If I can't solve this I may sell the card and get an MSI. Any whine issues with this card? I am totally fine with fan noise. If temps are an issue I can reapply paste. I know the msi390 OC's quite well, is it worthwhile to grab a 390x?

XFX R9390X card with 15.8 drivers here and no coil whine. I have watercooling on it, but don't think it makes much a difference.

I get a noise too from my XFX DD 390x. It sounds like something in between a buzz and a clicking. It also gets more like a high pitch squeal at times. Its not very audible through the case, buts its definitely there.

I have used the card for a week or so now and it hasn't gone away. I don't know if this signifies future problems or not. I read that it doesn't usually mean anything serious will happen but I don't know because I am not an expert.

I can't hear it when gaming. I can't even hear the normal card noise itself with heaphones in. I have to say this is probably the noisiest card I have ever had. It sounds a bit like a low powered washing machine on full go. Tbh this is what I would want a high end card to sound like. I am not bothered by the heat, noise or power consumption.

It is a beast of a card.

New drivers that fix the memory leak are up. 15.9.1 beta
