Great. I got the Gelid VRM heatsink kit, Kraken G10, Cosmos heatsinks for memory, Noctua 92mm fan for Kraken, Cougar Vortex 120 for radiator and Corsair H55. Core doesn't go higher than 55-60 and VRM hit 70 at most... and this is with pretty significant OC. Whisper quiet... i set the fans at 65% constant.

Hi guys I'm back. Saw my name on the list but just wanna correct it I upgraded from asus 390 to msi 390x BTW.
This is with -100mv. Temp for full load is 72c max room temperature around 25.
I tried -100 for aux along with -100 for core too BTW. The score increased to 2886 which is weird I would say. But temp is the same.

Hey guys I was wondering about my msi r9 390. When overclocking it maxs out at around 1141 core clock with 100+. It has never crashed but it gets arti-fracking on occt. Is my card a bad overclcocker or is something else wrong

What are your temps? Have you tried finding max oc at 50-75mv? Some people are finding better clocks in that range due to tdp limitations....

Is your msi 390 the "le" version?

Can anyone find some benchmarks where the 390X is consistently matching or besting the 980 at 1080p? I've seen so many sites show the 980 winning, or the 390X winning, I just don't know what to believe anymore.

At 1080p it's dependant on the game....

390x wins some battles, 980 wins others...

Overclocked, the 980 will win overall because Maxwell has so much headroom, but 1080 isn't where the 390 shines.

It's at 1440 and above where the 390 starts gaining ground on the 980 and its limited frame buffer...

And don't forget the price difference!

if you have a bencher in you . . . the 980 for sure. others who have used both will have differing views but here are some . . .

How I decide on a videocard purchase.

Do not get caught up with marketing claims or benchmarking/spec 'measurbators'. I had one NVIDIA fanboy tell me his 980 smokes my 390X. BTW his 980 has only a 3 FPS difference is one or two game benchmarks, not a scientifically valid reason to buy one over another. Plus my son has one so I can subjectivity compare the two cards.

Where do you want to be in 3 to 4 years? The card with the more VRAM will have more future-proofing NVIDIA users are going to find out that 4 Gig VRAM will not be enough down the road, I found that out when I got a 5870 with 1 gig onboard, If you have the cash to buy new tech every year VRAM is not an issue.

What tech is most important? ROP count. For example I almost bought a 980Ti at 750USD. The only tech factor that makes it better than the 390X is the 96 ROP vs our 64 ROP count. Wonder why is praised for 4K?

Fill rates are crucial for 4K more ROP's is the factor OEMs are overlooking so until this increases 4K is hard to achieve at insane FPS. Believe there is a limit on how many ROPs are physically possible to incorporate. We found out that HBM didn't make AMD into 4 K killers. Only time will tell if HBM is the answer.

Are you running stock fan profile?

90C is on the high side, especially for overclocking, and that probably means your VRM's are well over 80C.

My MSI 390 with custom profile and high flow case fans was hitting 76C core/75C VRM with 100mv+ and doing 1200/1700!

Get it cooler, and see how it does then..... I've not seen an MSI yet that won't break 1160 pretty easily.
