The ONLY reason a 390X will provide a big boost in pefformance over a 290X (instead of nice small gains herw and there) will be if a game uses more than 4GB of VRAM.

For the record I think a 390 is a great purchase...

Did i say you lived in the U.S? I said their prices don't represent all countries.. Is it so hard to believe that in countries with low turn around on GPU's, that those GPU's will continue to keep high prices? That was also in response to your sarcastic "LOL". So yeah, GG. rolleyes.gif

Really? only if it uses more than 4GB of Vram? It's almost as if i mentioned that in my original posts.. rolleyes.gif

@BradleyW

What was wrong with my original statement? There is a difference between them, one that makes up a 25fps difference. You said so yourself, it can't be the Vram amount, because it catches back up in 1440p, so what is it? The answer is we don't know, but there is obviously a difference.. It probably won't happen in other titles, it might be a one off problem that will be patched, none of that matters to me as i can get a 390x for no additional cost.

I'll have a look at the Powercolor, thanks.

Based on the above information, Occam's Razor would suggest the bench itself is flawed and not the card smile.gif

I never said the 390x was so much better.. What are you going on about? No one knows what the issue is, i said it might be the memory clock difference in the COD thread, i couldn't test that theory as i don't have the game, nor does my 290x clock that high.

Regardless of what is causing the problem, the 390x is beating the 290x at 1080p, my primary res, i can get a 390x at no additional cost to me and avoid the "issue" completely, i'm also guaranteed it won't happen in other games too. While also getting 8 Gigs of Vram to boot.

Now, does anyone know which 390x has the best cooler? lachen.gif

XFX has one of the best 390x around. Sapphire Nitro is good too. As is the PCS. I'd probably pick in that order. I may pick up a XFX 390x this weekend too.

Jeez... tough getting an answer around here eh? wink.gif

Ambients are quite and helped, maybe 14 c in my room at the moment. but it was a stable run!. Plus 200mv in Trixx is 1.4v when stressed fully, but in many games it wouldn't be glued to 1.4v as it was in Firestrike. Still, the temps are AMAZING on the VaporX cooler. Ambients helped, as well as my case cooling setup (have 4 Nocuta 2k fans hooked up to a fan controller, and 2 other random make fans too of lesser speeds).

i uploaded the image to show GPUz logs. Also, my PSU 12v sensor dips a nice bit when using so much voltage, I don't think it's a cause for concern, but I am going to be grabbing a new PSU soon (this SuperFlower Amazon Bronze 650 watt has served me well for 5 years). Probably going to grab a SuperFlower 650 watt Gold (either Golden Green or Leadex).

My card is easily drawing 350~ watts with this voltage, if not more, and CPU is 4790k at 4.9ghz/1.31v. So system is being heavily loaded when running this bench! probably 550 - 600 watts!

These are mine Saphire Nitro R9 390 score with my very old cpu 17 950. GPU has a factory default settings, except max power limit in after burner.

I was thinking of under clocking. I am using 15.10 beta drivers.

I have not used powertech monitoring system will try using that as well. GPU temp never went over 65 C degrees.

Wow.... Everybody take a chill Pill.... Love that you see since the middle of the year not only the discussion Nvidia vs. AMD but also 290x vs. 390x vs 970 vs. 390. vs 290.... (forget about the 970 biggrin.gif )

All those PCB+Chip bases ARE different.

Now that is exactly the biggest misconception. You need to differentiate between Cards and Chips.

True!!! the 290x and 390x have the same chip. But the biggest difference of the newer 390(X)s vs the older 290(X)s are the newly designed PCBs, the new cooling system, the new BIOS....
So they are different Cards with the same CHIP.
It's like comparing the same CPU with two different Motherboards, and two different CPU Coolers (and even build into two different pc cases). Of course this chip will behave differently.
NOW I am not taking into consideration really refurnished 290Xs with updated PCBs.

FURY X is using HBM VRAMs while R9 390X is using GDDR5 VRAMs can't really compare those.

NOW that being said, there should normally be no reason to "upgrade" from a 290(X) to a 390(X) unless you don't care about a minimal increase of FPS for 300-450 Euros spent tongue.gif

Sapphire seems to run the coolest on air but is not as good binned as MSI or XFX (according to the chart on the first page of this forum)
If you want to cool with water you probably have to go with XFX or Powercolor. Allthough I read somewhere that, was it Alphacool or something?, that offers now a water cooling system for MSI r9 390(X)???

Small side note: I hope my reasoning will not fire up the discussion again tongue.gif

I'd say XFX offers the best 390x overall. Good for air, good for cooling with an AIO since it has a good VRM cooler that is separate and good for full cover blocks as you can get those for it too.

I'm so temped to pick one up as well. Saw one at MC today for 399.99 after rebate. Nice card.

Do you have a seller for your 290x? I may be interested. PM me if so, and price.thumb.gif

Appreciate it, i'll take a closer look at the XFX, i just have to see if my supplier friend has them in stock. thumb.gif

A friend is hooking me up, so i'm sort of selling it to a distributor. redface.gif I live in South Africa anyway, so the shipping can be pricey, you'd probably find a much better deal locally than i could give you. wink.gif

I wish they made a Vapor-X 390X, the cooler really is something special.. I had a 37C ambient yesterday and it was still "only" in the high 70's/low 80's.

My score on Firestrike

CPU 4790K @ 4.6Ghz - 1.18v

R9 390 Nitro - 1200/1710 +90mv No Artifacts wink.gif

^The voltage for both of those has me jealous.

Edit:
Results from overclocked CPU and xfire pitcairn 7870's. http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4058192
Stock CPU and current overclock on 390 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/6449717

Waiting on CPU block to come back before I can put everything under water again. xfire setup was watercooled.
