I think GPU usage is for that or has been for me for 95% of the games.

card downclock while:
1. hitting power limit
2. hitting temperature limit
3. cpu bottlenecked
4. vsync, framerate limit

its not that its bad thing i dont think that stutter will go away if you lock card at maximum frequency
if game stutters with vsync is probably badly implemented vsync not card downclock issue

its easy to get frametimes from fraps and compare if really downclocking is that big problem

card also not just downclock it also undervolts smile.gif

Any ideas on how to keep the card cooler? My case has good airflow btw. It's just the heating on this particular card sucks lol.

Msi r9 390x
I have the same card. It gets real hot. I ditched the stock cooler a while ago and modded it here https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/528585-msi-r9-390x-dual-120mm-mod/?page=2
Crossfire didn't even work simce the 390x was throttling. With just the 390x and dual 120mms, I was getting 85c on the core with +100mv 1170mhz core. 390x is a VERY hot chip.

Seems when I have Vsync on, and its capping the FPS to 60, I am getting stutter in about every game. Now if I disable Vsync the throttle goes completely away, but I have some tears.

Is there any way to disable or modify the Powerplay, or have they yet?

Looks like its time to invest in a Freesync or 144hz monitor...
You can disable powerplay. Stuttering is odd though. V sync will cause your card to throttle anyways. Thats how it works.

@Agent Smith1984 Thanks for the addition on the front page but my clocks are wrong on my card :-) i get 1120-1600 on my sapphire 390x (i use this when playing demanding games like evil within) and i know i can get higher once i get my new psu next week XD

I'm hoping not to do all that lol. I think it's an error with the thermal paste application since my card is reaching 85 at 1110 and 31 mv. It reaches the high 80's at 100mv @1110 and at higher clocks goes to the low 90's. I've seen 91 so far. If this is normal I won't even bother. But does replacing the thermal paste void the warranty just in case?

So my 970 is struggling in tomb raider @ 2560x1440 eventho it`s clocked @ 1480/7600
I have the chance to sell my 970 for the same ammount I could buy a R9390X-DC2-8GD5 from ASUS, would you say the swap is worth it ?
How are your 390x-s handling the new tomb raider, and can one expect around the same OC from the 390X as the 390?

Your overclocks are actually really low but using a lot of voltage. I switched out the thermal paste and it only lowered temps by 1c. Im going kraken g10 with the x41 so I dont have to worry as much. These cards output a lot of heat. But yeah, try replacing the thermal paste. You do puncture the warranty sticker, but MSI is really chill as long as u return in original condition.
