Again this is just my opinion but they havent had good crossfire in probably a decade so i dont see it changing now since it really is such a small marker. Unless everyone ends up buying 2 rx480s instead of one, devs and AMD just wont put that much effort into crossfire, not as much as they will into VR (which i think wont pick up for a while anyways)

What monitor are you running right now?

Also, I don't think crossfire VR will take off. Too much variables and stutter. Unless AMD ups their game quite a bit VR with crossfire will be a one way ticket to the toilet.

Regarding VR Crossfire, I think one GPU per screen (or per eye in this instance) will be a completely different beast compared to classic Crossfire. There is no need to interlace the frames, split the load or anything. With some clever software, they can just split the workload 50-50, as both screens show roughly the same thing anyway. I think that instead of VR being the final nail in the coffin of SLI and Crossfire, it will bring it more towards the mainstream. Think about it. WIth such an implementation, you're effectively looking at double the performance. So Crossfire 480s would be a much better solution than a single 1080.

Of course, I could be wrong and this is impossible to pull off. After all I'm just talking out of my arse here. I just don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/grafikkarten/amd-radeon-rx-480/news-artikel/amd_radeon_rx,988,3274372.html

so the price could be:
RX 460 2GB ~ 79€
RX 470 4GB ~ 149€
RX 480 4GB ~ 209€
RX 480 8GB ~ 249€

I would say +30€ to all

75W is PCI-E Sig spec for 6 pin , then you have 75W from PCI-E slot, making it come up to 150W.

Hardware spec for 6 pin is ~190W so add on 75W from PCI-E slot = ~265W . There have been cards by AMD which don't conform to PCI-SIG spec but hardware spec, mainly dual GPU cards (ie R9 295X2).

On Videocardz they have a leaked RX 480 PCB image, 6+1 phases (GPU/RAM) to me it would seem higher spec than what would be required for low TDP card so perhaps AMD ref PCB is more in context to allow usage of power to hardware spec of 6 pin / PCI-E slot. All this depends on spec of VRM on PCB as well.

Most 6 pin connectors on PSUs are 6/8 so they have 3x 12V wires, no idea though if most PCBs with 6 pin connector have the 3rd 12V pin connected plus I would think a 3rd negative 12V line would be needed to make use of it, perhaps another with better knowledge can comment.

I kept info in the hawaii/fiji bios mod powerlimit section more towards PCI-SIG, here is hardware spec info I collected from a page on THG.

These are just specs, a pcie cable can indeed deliver more power provided its the right gauge and the psu can handle it. A 6 pin might be rated for 150w but easily surpass that and probably even provide 200w of power. I think the reason aib rx480s will have an extra 6/8pin is one, because they run a couple fans and have more VRMs. It unfortunately doesnt automatically mean its going to OC any better. Pretty sure the Sapphire boards have quite a few more VRM1s then amd boards but oc just the same if not worse haha.

The worst issues I had were with Far Cry 4 (possibly fixed now) and Skyrim, with Skyrim being absolutely unplayable with CF turned on, but got hundreds of frames per second with only one card anyways so no big deal...

I played Skyrim in 4K, so i must be using both my 290s 'cause i never bother disabling crossfire. It was very smooth. It played as smooth as my 7950 does using 1080. Vannila though.

Yep those specs are based on 18AWG IIRC (usual ATX spec for those connectors). As your an electronics man ( wink.gif ) am I reading this table correctly , 18AWG 10A @ 75C?

I concur higher phase count does not equal better OC thumb.gif . My mention of that "stuff" was just in the context that if VRM spec is good, then taking it into consideration and hardware spec of 6 pin when OC'ing it should cope with power load wink.gif .

Not sure how ekwb or other manufacturers work as far as what comes first but usually its a factory pcb that gets first wb. I mean ekwb had theirs to jayztwocents before the cards were even on sale to the public so it depends. They dont make too many aib amd waterblocks because according to them not too many want it. Theyll make a radeon pro duo block but not a sapphire r9 390 block which there is far more of, and yes i know the radeon duo is already on water haha.
