my cpu is running stock standard no overclock at all.

The card did the exact same issue in a totally different computer I think we can rule out any issue with my PSU/Machine by now, surely.

I gotcha still daisychained but yea not a problem. If you used the same method on the other pc though it is possible that its the issue.

Honestly if you can, i would try to remove one card entirely from the pc not even have it in the slot. The use BOTH cables into the card and see if you still have the issue, if you do RMA time, if not then youll know why. Worth a shot that way when you RMA you can tell em you tried that, 20$ says theyll make you try that anyways if their anal lol.

I just saw the pic. Youre not trying to plug a 6pin into an 8pin connector right? Is your card 8pin+8pin or 8pin+6pin? Cause i can't tell if both those connectors are 8pin, idk of many r9 390s that are 8+6

Even my 390x is a 8+6pin guess it depends on the aftermarket manufacturers decision to do dual 8pins

Maybe sapphire is the only 8pin+8pin. I thought they were all 8+8 then yea youre fine if you tried it on two SEPARATE cables and still have issues, some cards can be finicky with daisychaining power cables.

one card seems to be worse then the other one.......

If I however downclock the core by say -20mhz then all artifacts vanish and are gone for good.....

if I raise the clock by say +10 or +20mhz on the core I get crazy artifacts and screen flashes on both cards

is it safe to say these are REALLY bad overclocking cards or I just got duds???

should I rma?

This reminds me of the whole issues with the Gigabyte 780ti ghz edition that would artifact like crazy at the out of the box OC setting.

Finally, FINALLY, a store in Greece has brought some Thermal Grizzly compounds. You're gonna think that's a lot of excitement over something as mundane as TIM, but it's more the fact that it's (supposedly) the best TIM out there and we had no access to it that got to my nerves. Well, now I get to try it too. And it couldn't have come at a better time, as I'm having some CPU temps issues that I hope to sort out. Woo!

So I bought myself a 5.5g tube of Kryonaut and it's supposed to be here early next week. I hope they are punctual and don't screw me over. I'm more excited than I should be... tongue.gif

PS : I'm really really curious how much better than GC Extreme it can be. I mean, right now my GPU doesn't go over 72C when I game, and that's with a hefty overclock of 1175/1625MHz at +75/+50mV. At just 10MHz and 25mV less, it chills below 70C all the time. And that's without even having to take my side panel off. Turns out that the MSI cooler is indeed phenomenal and it's being held back by some bad decisions in the thermal compounds used.

A rather big tip from me : Use a 0.5mm thermal pad on the chokes. Or if you believe that they're chokes and don't need cooling, don't use padding at all. Seems that a >0.5mm pad (Like the stock one or the 1mm Phobya I had before) there hinders contact between the core and heatsink. WIth everything else exactly the same, with actually higher ambients and just the pad on the chokes changed, I shaved around 6C on your average gaming scenario and over 10C during a max overclock run. Ah... I'm finally enjoying this GPU even though its memory overclocking is crap. biggrin.gif

Hello fellow 390/390X owners. I'm very late to the club.
I bought my MSI R9 390X Gaming 8GB about two months ago for my first PC build. I was planning on using this as a temporary GPU until the GTX1080 release, but I've decided to keep it.

I've read that the thermal paste on the MSI R9 390X cards has sometimes been applied poorly, so when it arrived I opened it up and apply some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
I'm currently running a 1250mhz core clock and 1750mhz memory clock.

I've ran 3DMark Firestrike in which my PC scored 13252, with a 15590 graphics score. The temperature of the card stayed below 69c which I consider pretty good because the ambient temperature is pretty high right now.
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8950378

I've also ran UserBenchmark, on which it scored 105% for gaming, with a 114% graphics score. Somehow the GPU charts say the R9 390X has never scored higher than 112%.

Count yourself luck thats a hell of a nice OC. What is it running for aux voltage and power limit. Thats a pretty good card. MSIs run pretty hot so be glad its at 69. Kryonaut is delicious stuff though.

Thanks for replying. I knew I forgot something!
I have 3 presets in MSI Afterburner.

The first one is my 1200/1700 preset. I plan on using this if we get some crazy temperatures during the summer.
Voltages : +81/+63

The second one is the 1250/1750 preset which I am using right now.
Voltages : +100/+81

The third one is a factory preset which also uses my own fan curve.

The card always idles below 40c, when I boot up Battlefield 4, I choose to let the fan kick in aggressively so keep things cool. I haven't really noticed the sound.

If you see something I'm doing completely wrong, please let me know! These presets are the results of lots of testing in Furmark, 3DMark and Battlefield 4. I'd like to go higher on the 1250/1750 setup, but I'm afraid I'll have to up the voltage, which doesn't seem to be possible.

If there's anything else you'd like to know, just ask. tongue.gif
