A more powerful card while using vsync will prob use the same amount of power as a weak card going full out to keep those fps. I thought i was going to see a significant difference but its not so. Ill wait for aib reviews and see but i dont see much improvement prob just in temps. Rx 490 is prob what ill upgrade to.

The 390 seems to have a great life and dont expect anything really be worthy to upgrade until Vega hits.
the 490 might be but I dont expect it to.
still await the 480 custom made cards as if it fits my sis kid might get a good deal upgrade.

I bought a sapphire nitro 390x 8gb wensday. should be receiving it next tuesday.

it will replacing my nvidia 780 classified. I used to have two 780 in sli. but during maintenance, I accidentally broke 3 transistors on the back of the card.

been wanting a higher memory card anyway....

also been more AMD team anyway.

I have two questions:

What is the difference between Sapphire 390 Nitro 11244-01-20G and 11244-02-20G ?

I am a bit tired of waiting for 480 and now there are additional weeks of waiting for custom designs. Also I don't see it giving any improvement over 390 in terms of performance and price to performance (at least in my country). But I am still curious about how this card is going to perform and OC without temperature and power limitations. Here are some more of my thoughts about it from other forum, what do you think should I do? Pick up 390 or wait?
Quote:
And now I am even more confused... I wanted to get 480 temporary until Vega is out, but since it doesn't bring anything new in terms of performance and price to performance (at least in my country, 480 reference costs 1349 zł while Sapphire 390 Nitro costs 1440zł, so 480 Nitro will be at he same price or most likely more expensive than 390 Nitro), I decided not to wait another hell knows how many weeks for custom 480s and just get 390 Nitro (still didn't order it). Power draw is not a problem, I already counted that and my monthly electricity bill would grow from 250 to 258 if I take 390 over 480, so this is less than marginal difference. Noise and temps are also not a problem, Sapphire 390 Nitro is very cool and quiet card, especially for its TDP. But now this 480 Nitro looks really promising and also I am still curious how much power limited 480 is and if I can beat ~1150-1200 MHz 390 once its OC potential is unleashed, if there is any at all and additional power connectors will give any benefit and allow ~1500 overclocks. But there is still no release date and no reviews, hell knows how much waiting is left, and I could get 390 in like 3 days from now. My patience is really ending, but still I am curious about what 480 truly is after temperature and power limitations are removed by AIBs. But on the other hand waiting for 2+ weeks for reviews and probably month or so for availability in reasonable price is too much for me at the moment, I am sitting without GPU for a month now...

Also I play at 3440x1440 resolution so huge bandwidth of 390 should also be argument for getting it over 480 right? 480 seem to be doing very well in 1080p but it is loosing with 390 in 1440p and especially 4K, 3440x1440 is somewhere in the middle.

Overall I don't think that 480 will be able to beat 390 overclocked to max by any significant margin at 3440x1440 even with custom designs, it could be faster by less than 5% probably, or so I think...

Two more questions:

Is it true that Sapphire overclocking tool allows +200mV overvolting?
Is it true that power section on 390 Nitro gets as hot as 100C+ after overvolting?

My tube of Kryonaut got here this morning and first impressions are extremely good. It's the details, you know. You purchase a premium product, you want it to feel like one. It's well packaged, has two applicators (Maybe in case one of them gets lost or something), a Thermal Grizzly sticker... It was an attractive package. And when a company goes to great lengths for something as mundane as thermal paste, they have my attention.

Now, I installed in on my 390x and... Meh at first. 1C improvement? Maybe? Then I realized that the numbers I was comparing in my head were against Gelid GC Extreme whilst at an ambient of about 21C. While I was playing the room was certainly over 25C. So take that how you will. It works. GC Extreme is a close second, but neither Arctic MX-4 nor, god forbid, MSI's stock paste worked. Both those led to temps over 80C with a +50mV overvolt. At my usual 1175/1625MHz at +70/+50mV the Gelid paste would land at about 73C max, while Kryonaut stayed at 72C for its max, but usually was at 70-71C. I'll test again after having my AC run for a few hours.

TL;DR : If you can find it, get some. For the CPU, I dunno how much of a difference it'll make (I'll try in the next few days), but for the GPU it's worth it. We're talking about over 10C improvement over stock for my MSI 390x. It's like getting a new cooler for it. thumb.gif

I have Hydronaut on my CPU and it works better than anything I've used. Pleasantly pleased with it, and definitely plan on using it on my 390x

Hydronaut is pretty good but Kyronaut is better for GPUs its nice and thick, its why gelid extreme works so well on GPUs.

This is temporary card until Vega is out, then I will resell it or give it to my younger brother for even lower price, so long term is not really a matter here. I will switch from it soon and since I have 3440x1440 monitor I won't be able to play AAA games where all of those newer technologies can even matter, I just need something to wait for Vega on and play some less demanding games meanwhile. My younger brother is not any kind of enthusiast, this kind of GPU will be amazing for him compared to his current crappy laptop anyway, and he will play at 1080p at best, probably 900p max, so again nothing to gain from newer technologies.

I will get 390, some people who pre-ordered this card from Overclockers UK said that they told them that they will get in late July, 22nd July to be precise, and Overclockers is the first shop to get them in EU. So until those cards reach my country... And given very small possibility of reasonable pricing for first month or so... I am not going to wait for 2 months, I am already full month without GPU.
