Anyone knew if 390X Devil uses reference board?

It doesn't, though it looks like a good one.

I scrapped the 390 btw. So now, looking at buying either another Nitro 390 or a 390X.

It has the potential for modding but lack the headroom.

Guys what's the best solution between r9 390 nitro and msi for overcloking ?
I've been experimenting a bit with my XFX 390x in MSI Afterburner and it looks like I'm going to be temperature throttled before any overclocking.

I played Crysis 3 at +0% Power Limit and my core clock stayed mostly in the 990s with my temperature plateauing at 84 degrees. Then I changed to +50% Power Limit and shot up to a stable 1060Mhz while my temperature climbed. Eventually temperature plateaued at 94 degrees while my clock rate moved around somewhere in the 1000s.

This can't be normal, right? It would seem to mean I can't overclock at all with my current case setup because I can't keep a stable stock clock of 1060 Mhz in the first place.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, I haven't had a chance to look around in this thread yet.

Honestly its a crap shoot. Some sapphires have elpida some have hynix. The hynix ones dont seem to get a higher core then the elpida and elpida cant OC the mem as high as hynix but the cores seem to go higher. its always a crap shoot.

More info on case/fans/etc because yea hitting 94°C on stock clocks is pretty bad.

The case is the Thermaltake Chaser A31 ATX Mid Tower Case. I bought the PC used and have never had occasion to mess with the fans but it looks like they're just the one main expulsion fan in the back, immediately behind and orthogonal to the CPU. Then there's also the PSU fan.

I will very likely not be overclocking since I only have a 600W PSU but still I would like to get the full stock 1060Mhz is possible.

Is it normal to install additional case fans for this card? It's the double dissipation.

There should be 2 intake fans as well. If they're missing i would add 2 front intake fans immediately and remove one or both of the HDD cages if youre not using em or have the HDD mounted somewhere else. Just looked at the pics looks you can a dd a bottom fan as well right behind the PSU. That should help a bit more then front intake fans as it will blow the air right onto the gpu.

That should help quite a bit right off the bat.

The Nitro has better cooling but it's still a lottery.

Lottery.
MSI might edge out but basically every card is around 1100-1150mhz OC.
sure some may do more but then you really need good cooling.

Might be bad contact with the core.
if xfx allows it with warranty might tighten screws or replace the tim.
