Perhaps your cooler is faulty or maybe you have an aggressive custom fan curve?
I don't use any fan curve, just stock settings. Tried using a curve which doesn't go as fast to 100% fan speed, but then temps went way too high. I have an Accelero IV installed now in the card, idle temps around 30°C, load rarely above 60°C. This is with fans which are barely audible under load. When I used the stock cooler (and I did try re-applying other paste), the temps were around 45°C idle (no fans spinning) and easily went to +80°C under load with the fans rising to 80% or more making the card pretty loud. I had an Asus GTX980 STrix before and that card was really really silent even under heavy load in same case with even less casefans installed (at the time).
Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with the cooler or (more so) the heatpipes/heatsink, because I find the difference between the stock cooler and the Accelero very very big. No problem to keep using the Accelero, weren't it for the fact that it makes the card VERY large, and then I cannot use the hdd cage in my Fractal R4 causing some weird vibrations. Also, going SLI with this setup is a no-go, which bothers me too.
The MSI stayed pretty silent until about 60% fan speed, anything above that was easily heard and annoying at +75% fan speed. Mind, I have an almost completely silent pc with very large fans blowing at a low rpm to keep noise down (noise is something incredibly important to me). Mind also, when I used the stock MSI cooler, I set the casefans to fullspeed with almost no difference in temps/noise from the card (which confirms there's a enoug airflow in my case and this loud MSI cooler is not a result of heat trapped inside). My CPU stays pretty cool too.
