1.224volts - limited by the TDP of the stock bios

I just built a new pc (Z170 mobo, 6600K, Corsair RM750 power supply, 16gb DDR4) and I notice my MSI has quite a bit of coil whine now. This was not present with my previous build. Any idea what could be causing this? Kinda annoying.

Are you sure it's the card and not the PSU? My PSU for whatever reason screams with coil whine in heaven benchmark...

Well my only solution is not really a solution... Game with surround sound headphones, you won't really hear it anymore.

Nope, it's definitely the card but I now have a Fractal R5 case with a window, so might be that I hear it a bit better compared to my previous case (R4 with normal side panel).

That will defintely compromise sound dampening of your case.

So what is the most effective way to water cool the MSI 980TI?

This is my new build : https://pcpartpicker.com/b/yynnTW . Like I posted there, the main thing kinda bothering me (a bit) is the looks of the GPU, would love a more slick looking card which is silent at the same time. The stock cooler didn't do it for me, and the Accelero works great but looks like a dog imo.

For typical heat output of 275-300 watts and maximum around 400 watts, nothing is better than water cooling for most effetive 24/7 removal of heat from both the GPU and VRMs. My OC increased about 60MHz, while temps decreased from 72c to 40c with a simple expanded H220 loop. My build: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/JzTH99. Even though AIO works fine, it isn't removing the critical heat from the VRMs actively, but rather passively spewing it into the case to heat up other components.

Gotcha...I guess I will stick to the stock air cooler...I have a Kraken x61 AIO for my CPU...really don't want to go down the full custom watercooling trail...

Get the AIO cooler. The core heat is being shot out the back of the case. Your Vrms are air cooled by default anyway and spitting that along with the core heat back in your case. If you're worried about it, do like I did and OC it on the stock voltage. I'm running 1429 right now on boost. I haven't tested it to the limits, but, my card holds 1429 without dropping easily. Max core temp is 55c, but, it rarely hits that. At 55c my H90 fan is set to hit 55% fan speed and the temps normalize or decrease. I almost have to force it to hit above 54c however (Max/Witcher3/1440p/uncapped fps).

Even with the Vrm being cooled passively by air the move to a AIO over stock cooling was damned near a religious experience.

*Remember too, my current OC was not tested to the limits. I'm not sure just how high my OC can go without touching voltage. I just like the current performance/heat output/fan levels.
