GTX 980 Ti - Gigabyte G1 Gaming - impressions and OC - Page 83

Quick question I have been reorganising my cabling in my case and was doing this whilst the G1 graphics card was looping some tests. Core v1.199 max, fans around 50% core temp around 74C . I was surprised how hot the backplate was eg. almost too hot to touch. Has anybody aimed a fan at it to see if it helps with temps? The heatsink and backplate certainly get hot with this graphics card!

I had this exact same issue. I am using Display Port and bottom line is that I needed to use the port FURTHEST away from the motherboard when the card is installed. I think it may be #4. This was different from when I had my 980's for whatever reason.

Thanks man!!! It works for my on #3 ports.

I bought a second one of these g1 980ti's to run in sli this week. Got the waterblock installed last night and put it in the loop for the first time. Looked at the asic score and it was a 63%. mad.gif I had to drop my oc by 55mhz on the core and i'm still getting some random artifacting in games. Probably going to drop it further. My other card is a 74% and oc'd so much better. I thought gigabyte was binning the chips for these cards? Was not expecting to get garbage like this in a nearly $700 vid card.

Anyone else get a really low asic with one of these? Seems most of them are in the 70-80% range.

But ASIC score doesn't matter. LoL! Someone will comment soon with a flawed explanation of how ASIC's doesn't matter. Don't worry. Hahahaha lachen.gif

its such crap, my oc is now lower than what my first card got on air

My graphics chip ASIC value is a relatively low 64.1%, lower than my unbinned MSI 680 (72.5%) or PNY 580 (80%). Unfortunately the lower the ASIC value the more voltage is required to achieve a given overclock frequency e.g. more fan noise to dissipate the heat and ultimately ability to remove heat will hinder maximum overclock.

My understanding is average ASIC is lower with the 980 Ti chip than 580,680,780 etc and 60-70 is fairly common.

SOC ─ GPU Gauntlet™ Sorting - With GPU Gauntlet™ Sorting, the Gigabyte SOC graphics card guarantees the higher overclocking capability in terms of excellent power switching. (it don't say anything about ASIC guarantees and clearly Gigabyte ain't binning for that).
Maybe SOC = Stupid Owners Club

I feel a bit mugged as I paid more for a graphics card with Gauntlet Sorting. Why would a graphics card with a low graphics chip ASIC pass Gauntlet Sorting?

I think I won lottery thumb.gif. I could probably push it harder with BIOS tweaks but I was amazed anyway in my last test results so I don't want to stress my baby too much ^^.

I think it the end its all about silicon lottery.
Nice to here that. Yours is why I won't say they don't scale and why I say it's not the norm like Kepler was. thumb.gif

I love mine - My standard 24-7 bios is 1519/8000 with adaptive voltage in NCP.

At least G1s have "Gigabyte Gauntlet" system that pick good OC chips (not hight ASIC etc but those that will OC good). On average you get more and easier OC with Gigabyte. They are considered best overclocking 980 Ti (apart from I'd say KINGPIN) and best price/performance wise. While Classifieds can achieve 1500 on core, many times they have hard time with it, while generally G1s can achieve 1500 easly and it is hard to find G1 that can't do it.

On air Gigabyte is imo best air cooling 980 Ti- it can maintain super temps even highly OCed. Classifieds achieve much higher temps as there is a lot of plastic there and only two fans. Gigabyte cooler is considered best on air from all 980 TIs. Zptac AMP Extereme is also as good I think.

On water there is no difference between Classified, Gigabyte, MSI or Zotac as it is just a matter of chip. You still have better chances to get better OCing chip with Gigabyte, but in the end on water it is sillicon lottery. On Water performance will be super close between all non-referance cards.

Also you won't get huge jump on water. For example people jump from 1537 to 1580, I would probably jump from 1520 (on air right now) to maybe 1570-80 with my card. Not worth- it is like...2-3 FPS more?

I was torn between Classified and G1 also but went with G1 and I am super happy with my choice.

The only reason I would take Classified is EVGA support but that it is all.
My G1 went from a strong 1545 max on air to a solid 1590 or better depending on temps on water.

I'm awaiting Forceman to update the single card Fire Strike scores to put me in the #1 slot. O/C this card is faster than many Titan X on the FS single card list in graphics scores.

IF you extreme cool (dice, extreme chill and or ln2) that's when the higher quality phases come into play hard. Under air and water you will see no real gain EXCEPT knowing you have some quality stuff under the hood.
