Just don't read MSI Gaming's reviews.

Is it me or is it's a bit higher on the temps?

Hmm.. Is it that good? I'm not so sure.. 8 VRM phases vs 12 for GPU, lower stock clockspeeds, lower fan activation temperature.. Granted the noise levels are better - 39DBA compared to 41DBA according to the GURU3D reviews, but that is the only true plus I'd give it.

Plus the STRIX looks sexy

EDIT

Actually the temps really aren't that great with the STRIX.. Hmm....

For such a massive cooler you'd think it would do a better job. Maybe those heatpipes that aren't touching the GPU are really hurting the cooling performance?

EDIT

Read this article, it shows that the Fury X is being listed in Germany as having a STRIX variant, so the cooler used here would be used for it too.

Would explain the heatpipe issue...

It's a shame, but I agree. Good looking card, great specs, but it should be much cooler.

3 fans, heat pipes that are as wide as an exhaust - it sucks! No! asus would not be my choice, one one of the hottest 980ti's for sure.

That Zotac Amp has brilliant temps

Very decent card overall. I understand why the temps are what they are as explained. That said if I was in the market for this card, i'd holdout for a waterblock especially as Strix is a named GPU brand and it's likely one would be forthcoming.

Seems to be a pickem in the 980 ti space.

While I understand the point of the reviewer bringing this up, I don't think anyone here on OCN cares about a whole (in their control) 26mhz except in the case of ASUS competitors pointing it out....

But all is fair in love and war...

The performance is seriously faster than a GTX Titan X, yet pricing is much better at MSRP is $700 USD marker plus tax.

The card runs passive up to 50C. The fans are not on, thus higher temps.
At load, it runs the fans at a low RPM with a high factory OC, thus higher temps.
This is an out of the box review, so these results are expected.

Users can easily adjust this.

The msi gaming OC is quieter at load, and only goes up to 72C. (vs 82C)

Asus have cheaped out again and are using the same cooler on different GPUs, (R9 290 series anyone?)

I don't see why anyone would buy this card over the gigabyte, zotac, msi etc.

Luckily they can rely on asus devotees to buy their products. They will have no problems being one of the top sellers with the words asus strix on it.

Maybe the results are flawed? I'm really surprised how far from the MSI this card is.

An extra 38mhz clock makes no sense looking at these results.

At what fan speed?

Look at the OC section. They have the MSI card running at 65% but the STRIX running at 55%.
ASUS is using slower fan speeds to run closer to passive. Under 50C the fans turn off. That's doesn't happen on the other cards.

Out of the box, above 50C the STRIX runs at 46% fan speed. That's a pretty low speed for load temperatures with a 20-24% factory OC.

Fan speed doesn't seem relevant to me. These are out of the box noise tests and the MSI card is at 39 dba, and the asus is at 41 dba.

Temps are 10C different, whilst being noisier.

Is there something I'm missing or is it in your mind worth the extra 30-40mhz?

The fan off mode is great and all but to probably 90% of gamers they have louder case fans anyway than an idling gpu.

edit - I see what you are saying but I still think the msi is the superior cooler looking at the regular out of the box results.

First of all the cooler is decent I suppose, I have a custom bios with 1.268vc and my card is at 1540mhz core 8000mhz mem, with the Amp cooler at a noisy 80% my load temps under heavy gaming were reaching 81-82c.

I got curious and installed my old Accelero 3 cooler which is barely audible even at 100% fan speed. I was able to keep the stock VRM cooling in tact on my Zotac card which is a bonus and I was also able to keep the backplate in tact. Too my surprise using the same voltage and clock speeds my Load temps are now 58-60c compared to 81-82c! Before anyone asks I did try removing the Amp Cooler and replaced the tim but it made little to zero difference.

I think the artic cooler is a good way for those to go who do not want to deal with water cooling and im betting my temps are comparible to some of the cheaper AIO setups and also a lot less trouble.
I have noticed that those Accelero 3 coolers always drop temps dramatically. I am not sure why Asus/MSI/Zotac hasn't adopted a similar design for their aftermarket cards.

i think a custom fan curve will fix that because the pcb and heatsinks heat from being in passive mode
this card was meant to be silent overall not just cooling performance if you want both it will cost a bit more
the clocks in load without oc by user from Msi are slightly different even the power consumption like less 40w

maybe i tested different versions at work but they clock differently in gaming
