New Rig, New CPU (4790k) temps.

After 18 months I am back to PC gaming. Just completed my rig and my 4790k with stock speeds and stock cooler is about 75 degrees in games. I am not too familiar with current gen CPUs so I was wondering If I am well within my safe range?

Thank you.

I would say around 28-30 Celcius....and this is with mild air conditioning.

My new rig has only stock fans. Big one in front and a 140mm one in the back. I might invest in 1-2 case fans.

My Galax GTX 970 EXOC Black also hits 75 degrees (with default fan settings) as well.

Oh, then I think that I would say that everything's working perfectly.

I would try to get a better cooler on the 4790K though. Since the stock cooler really isn't that great.

Thanks guys.

I will probably get a H90i or something like that in the next few months but not right away. Perhaps even by the end of the year.

To be fair no not really. So far my system is a 1080p 60 fps one. I will get an Oculus Rift in 2016 and thats it. Will only switch to a 4K setup when a single GPU can easily handle new games at 60fps.

There really is no point for me to OC but I know that to keep my CPU cooler I will get a H90i and will be tempted to OC

Well, I'm just saying don't waste your money on a cooler if you won't be overclocking. Your current CPU temps are very safe.

Yeah you are right. I need to listen to my inner voice which tells me exactly what you are saying

The 4790k comes in at such a high stock boost that oc'ing isn't needed.

You can force it to hold 44 if you want. Boost on higher end mobo applies to all cores.

All I did there was set the min processor state at 100% in windows. I do usually just let the cpu do its thing though. I've yet to notice a real world difference between forcing the max clocks, and just allowing it to boost as needed.

Grats on the new system. That 4790k is still one hell of a cpu for gaming.

Yep loving the 4790k so much for now. Glad I bought it

But red flag guys. CPU temp hit 87 degrees.

Maybe I need to invest in some type of a CPU cooler.

I was playing Spec ops The Line and than BF4. Checked MSI afterburner and saw that max CPU temp for one core was 87, other 85 etc etc...

Looking into Cooler Master Seidon 120 right now.
Half price of Corsair H80i and performs similar.

Oh. I am clueless about whether Afterburner is accurate or reliable for CPU temps. Normally, I trust Real Temp. Do you have that? It's probably the same, but I guess I just can't help but be curious now.

These cpu run hot, but, that does seem pretty damned hot.

Those temps I'm showing are from the computer being turned on and sitting idle. Still, the hottest my cores get at stock are spikes of 60 or so.

Of course the temps I'm thinking of are in a ambient at 68-70f

Wait, how are you getting that temp? Is it just through normal use, or stress testing? Even at stock stress testing can put the heat on these things. I stopped using things like Prime95 myself and instead just use "Asus RealBench" to test the cpu. Works fairly well and gives you a good idea of temps and stability under normal use.

*Wrote this before reading your new post.

Yea, 85 c is pretty damned hot. Though, like I said, even with this H100i I hit 60 on the cores at times.

I will download it right now and play few rounds of games and see what happens.

Yeah too hot. Idle CPU temp is around 40 degrees. Played some games (including BF4) and saw that at one point my CPU was 87 degrees.

I'd look into getting a better CPU cooler ASAP.

I haven't touched my 4790k with prime95 or intel burn.

And yea, the 4790k is one hell of a gaming cpu. You just have to manage the temps. I'd assume the stock cooler was good enough, but, if you're in a hotter then average environment it explains the higher temps.

Yeah won't be cheap and grab myself a Corsair H80i. Will have it on thursday.

BTW I had Nvidia Shadowplay ON. Would that have an impact on high CPU temperatures?

No, it shouldn't. Just watch that it isn't recording tons of temp files to your SSD if you have one. I manged to do about 8GB 8TB of data to my ssd using it without realizing it.

Samsung magic keep up with data written to the drive. I had Shadow Play running while I was gaming without realizing it was recording many hours of gameplay as temp files. I think it was like that for a few days. I had it pointed towards my data drive though. =/

It increased by 8 TB in a period of only a few days?

Yea, it didn't take long.

The drive was maybe a month old. I had about 200gb life time writes when I started messing with it. I had over 8tb or around 8tb when I realized what was happening. That was about a year and a half ago. I currently have a total of 10TB written to my drive. So, in well over a year I've written 2tb or so of data to my SSD.

Something like that. It's been a while and the details are fuzzy. I'm just saying keep an eye on it.
