also cut off upto $100 dollars from dropping the unlocked processor and going for a locked one. and with the locked chip you could drop the cpu cooler also.
Lowest option http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jKzWf7 still should be noticably faster than your current [$218.93]
about double the performance in bench marks

OCing isn't a huge deal to me thanks to the fact what I'll be doing won't be too heavy, and my improvements over this processor will be well worth it anyway.
In terms of USB, I'm looking for around 4 ports that are either USB 2.0 or 3.0, or a mix of both. 3.0 isn't too important too me.

Well that board has 6, and 2 of them are usb 3.0(there's also front headers for both I believe)
Business boards usually have a good build quality,
Gigabyte I consider the second best brand just under Asus
and with the $150 saved you can sell this rig in a couple years, and upgrade for free, basically.
My original system was an A8 5600k[if I recall] that I sold[$100 profit], bought a used i3 system [sold for more profit] etc etc eventually getting me this system, for the time of building the systems, + the 220$ initial investment in the A8 system. You can do the same as me, except not waste money on unlocked stuff. [Especially on the initial investment, only get a k if you get it for free by selling this rig] tongue.gif

A local shop has the i5-4690k for $200 flat and a Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H for $80. How does that sound?

No point in getting a k processor on an h board k = unlocked h/b=locked[sometimes allows some modification] z=unlocked
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#c=99&sort=a8&page=1 z97 boards cheapest first, micro atx
