I use a Deluxe X99 for a year now and I've never encountered such issues since BIOS 0801. Currently on 1801.
I've been overclocking CPU and RAM from the start.

Lets talk boards for a moment. If we compare ATX motherboards for both platforms, what are the pros and cons?

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I'd repeat it:
Code:
If I ran SLI on an Asus Z170 Deluxe, I could (in theory) have the following setup:
Slot 1 (x1) : Sound card
Slot 2 (x16): GPU (x8)
Slot 3 (x1) : *blocked*
Slot 4 (x1) : Firewire card
Slot 5 (x16): GPU (x8)
Slot 6 (x1) : *blocked*
Slot 7 (x16): x4 card (Thunderbolt or M.2)

Lets see what I can get away with if only one card is used.

X99 Sabertooth (x16,x8,x4):
Slot 1 (x16): GPU (x16)
Blank
Slot 2 (x2) : Sound card
Slot 3 (x16): x4 card (Thunderbolt or M.2)
Slot 4 (x1) : Firewire card
Slot 5 (x16): *Disabled for on-board M.2*

Asus Z170 Deluxe (x8,x8,x4):
Slot 1 (x1) : Sound card
Slot 2 (x16): GPU (x8)
Slot 3 (x1) : *blocked*
Slot 4 (x1) : Firewire card
Slot 5 (x16): x4 Thunderbolt
Slot 6 (x1) : *Available*
Slot 7 (x16): x4 M.2

OR

Asus Z170 Deluxe (x16,0,0):
Slot 1 (x1) : Sound card
Slot 2 (x16): GPU (x16)
Slot 3 (x1) : *blocked*
Slot 4 (x1) : Firewire card
Slot 5 (x16): *Disabled*
Slot 6 (x1) : *Available*
Slot 7 (x16): *Disabled*

OR

Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO (x16,0,x4)
Slot 1 (x1) : Sound or firewire card
Slot 2 (x16): GPU (x16)
Blank
Slot 3 (x1) : *Disabled*
Slot 4 (x16): *Disabled*
Slot 5 (x1) : *Disabled*
Slot 6 (x16): x4 card (Thunderbolt or M.2)

It seems as though you have more flexibility with X99 if you only use one card, but you oddly have more lanes to work with on the z170 boards if you run SLI (albeit at x8 speeds for the gpus). Can anyone point out anything else?

I get so irritated every time I think about how many lanes my 5820k has, I need to not think about it. lol

I don't understand you Intel..... WHYYYYY?

Obviously, because EVERYONE would just buy a 5820K instead of a 5830K and overclock it a smidgen. Whereas, doing what they have and making the 5820K significantly different (that's dependent on GFx setup really) they can at least try to defend having 2 different products and different prices.

I am still thinking hard about 5820K vs 6700K.
Those 2 extra cores = ~20% decrease in HD rendering time.

Regarding idle wattage again: I've seen the reviews and it looks to be about 20w +/-5w difference between the two at idle. I can be that this is with fully auto board settings though. I wonder if it is possible to actually reduce idle consumption of Haswell-E further than Skylake. It may be that auto settings aren't far from the lowest a Sklyke CPU can go, whereas undervolting with offsets could drop a 5820K closer to 10w difference, or even less.

How is the backplate on X99 boards? I fancy a NH-D15 cooler, and it's back brace for 115X covers quite a nice big area. The back plate/brace on X99 seems to be already integrated and a bit smaller in absolute footprint size. It's 1.3+ kg of cooler hanging off of that board. I wanna keep it well secured and reduce/spread as much strain as possible.

The stock one is somewhat beefy. It is integrated already but I haven't looked into how hard/easy it would be to remove. I'd bet it's possible though. This is what mine looks like:

(MSI X99S SLI Plus)

I know that's why they did it, but it's just ridiculous that you have to spend $200 more for the 5930k for like 12 more lanes and that's about it.

Thanks for that image of the back of your mobo. That is actually a lot wider than one I saw on an ASUS Deluxe board.

Hmm, this makes things interesting...

Nope, I think I have got it a bit wrong.
It seems ASUS (and some others) are going for a smaller plate front and rear in some cases to facilitate use of existing high-end LN2 cooling.

Oh yeah, of course it seems like a stitch up, c'mon it's Intel's business practice isn't it. We're all suckers because AMD ain't kickin' their ass. Intel excelled when they came out with the Core 2 Duo era, only because AMD hurt them, and they needed to do something to get on top - and boy did they!. It's been business as usual for Intel since they got back on top, hanging customers upside down and shaking their pockets empty. But remember, no one is forcing us to buy anything, their just making the options expensive, because they can. So it's 5820K or 6700K for the same price. They crippled both biggrin.gif

All of you are talking about gaming and recording or stream concurrently or on the other hand, doing video rendering. What if it's just gaming and nothing else?

Just gaming and nothing else then the i5 6600k would probably be plenty.... But since this thread is between the 6700k and 5820k you would be fine with the 6700k.

I know the 6700k is enough, of course. It was my first choice, but the it costs the same of the 5820k, so the difference is only the mb price. Now the 6700k is enough, but the C2D also was back in the day over a C2Q. I know you understand...
