Why Did You Stay With An AMD CPU? - Page 56

Yeah I miss $1200 btc and ltc diff low and conversion good. Made almost $5000 in 3 months from December '13 utiil feb '14 before the Mt gox scandal decimated btc prices. All my hardware ended up being free with some money left over.

I'm a diehard intel phan.. I'll admit it. My current desktop was supposed to be kind of a "dream machine" build for me.. it's 5960x with 3x NVidia GTX 980 ti in SLI. Furthest thing from AMD you can get. Let's just face it, the current generation of intel chips just can't be touched by anything AMD is offering on performance or TDP (and before you start flaming me, I remember the netburst years....)

Yet I'm coaching a robotics team for my kids, I had to put together 7 pcs. 3 I already had lying around. the remaining four I had to put together from old parts... only 1 I did was an intel, the other 3 are AMDs. Why?
because I was able take fairly old am2+ and an am3+ mobo, flash the bios, get some decent multi core chips (one is using a 8370e, phenom II in the other ... forget what kind), good old ddr2 or ddr3 memory, used two old cases I had lying around, mobos had integrated AMD graphics, and -- voila-- instant work stations for the kids that are actually pretty decent, for around $100 each (yes, I had the cases, ssd and monitors laying around)

Not to say I couldn't have done that with an old intel core setup, but by sticking with the same socket for so many years, AMD has created an environment where there are a HUGE amount of dirt cheap mobos and chips that, for everyday programming/office purposes, are really quite good.

And they offset the price of your dream machine quite nicely too.

But let's be honest, would you have spent upwards of two thousand for a dog that can't trounce any AMD setup? mellowsmiley.gif

I think not. biggrin.gif

I put the x5960 together a month after haswell-e came out, and only a month or two after the 980s came out (and recently upgraded to ti's). and I used all top-shelf parts. And to boot, ddr4 had just been released, and M.2 drives were still very, very new. I'm embarrassed to say that it was *well* over $2k. You're right, for that money, it should trounce anything amd can throw out. and by "trounce," in reality I'm really talking benchmarks.. this was more of an ego build for me.... in real world "seat of the pants," I'm sure I can put together a $1k AMD setup that "feels" just as or almost as fast as the intel...

But you gotta admit, pretty cool seeing this when you open up task manager (which unfortunately doesn't show the very stable 4.2ghz overclock):

Why, finances of course. I keep upgrading piece by piece, sometime MB, sometime CPu, GPU, RAM ETC so staying on one platform makes more sense.

I think a lot of the reason I picked AMD for my last two builds was price/performance ratio. Before this fx 8320 I had a Phenom II x3 720 that unlocked to a quad and was able to run it at 3.8 Ghz. And I picked up this FX on a crazy sale for $120. Both were more than adequate for my needs.

Lousy thank you. No much money circulating, importers and stores not keeping much in stock and for anything that's not selling like hotcakes you have to wait for them to import. That can take several weeks and is expensive. Had to resort to buying this last FX6350 from a private guy who got it from Hungary (probably illegally) in two days. There's a lot of obsolete computers but second hand equipment trade is thriving. There's not much produced here, few tablets and phones only. There's a lot of computers but mostly older stuff, everybody crazy about smartphones though, there's more of them than people.

Thanks for the information.
I played games for many years with a couple of guys from Belgrade but fell out of contact with them. They were some of the funniest dudes I've ever met and loved technology, but this was back in the Athlon 64 days.

Those were times of Lan Parties and clubs, now with faster internet people are staying home mostly. There is a WoW team doing pretty good, younger kids are still into online Counterstrike.
