Mid priced gaming computer for 16 yr old. ****Updated 10-18-15***** - Page 2

Thanks guys. The kid has $450 saved up and his dad said he would pitch in another $300 to try and get something to last two years. He also needs to buy a monitor, keyboard and mouse since he has been running windows on a mac.

The power supply is an Antec BP550 Plus.

I do have a micro center nearby.

I think the other guy will sell the 780 for between $100-$150. His computer took a lightning strike through the ethernet cable and we just replaced the majority of his system with a 980ti super clocked. We put his 780 in this machine and it would not power up. Not sure if the card is bad or not enough power. He is sending the card back to EVGA, so we shall find out soon what the verdict is on the card. I do know it was a tight fit in this case.

That PSU can only do 384 watts on the 12v rail so its pretty much useless if you want to add a new video card to the system.
About the only cards you can get away with is a GTX 750 Ti or a 270x or lower.

Just checked microcenter, and the have the following

6300 black edition 3.5 for $89
8320 black edition 3.5 boxed $119
8320e black edition 3.2 $109
8350 black edition 4.0 boxed $149
They also have some bundle deals on new mobos as well.

So probably $15-$20 for a cd/dvd drive
$60 on a western digital blue (or any other recommendation)

I'm just curious to see what the status will be on the video card. If the 780 is bad, what will last a couple years (if possible) in this budget?

I know just enough about these things to be a danger to myself (like the fan plugs here and this power chord goes there).

Get the 8320e. But I thought the video card being RMA'd meant that you could still buy it? You would just have to wait?

You've got $750 to spend. $100 - $150 of it towards the GPU leaving you $600. Need a good PSU $100ish. $500... Could get a i5-4690k/Z97 mobo for $350ish leaving you $150 for whatever.

I was just looking at these to put in my ol'lady's rig.

4690k $239

GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128711

*I'd spend that GPU money, and the extra $150 on a new GTX 970 over a used 780. But that's just me.

You could probably pick up a used 290 or 290x for super cheap. They are hot though, but still for around $150-$200 you really cant beat em.

OP, if you're hell bent on going AMD I've got a FX 8320 or FX 6300 I'd let go for a fair price. Have to see what they're going for used. I still have the stock fans/box.
