regardless of that you cant use over 4GB of physical RAM on SLI. and if you do it will happen the same that the 970 does above 3,5

Allocated vram past the physical vram will make slow downs it seems you keep

I logged system usage for the GTX 770 at QHD Ultra and found that the game was trying to allocate nearly 3GB of VRAM use, which on a 2GB card means there's going to be a lot of texture thrashing.

Hi guys!

I am currently planning to buy a videocard. Originally I wanted 980 ti but due to coming of HBM2 rather soon I decided not to buy it.
I am planning to buy r9 390 8GB. Originally I wanted to buy 970, but then decided to go for radeon at least once, because I wanted to buy videocard as temporary solution before HBM2 (my current is 9800 GT 512 MB smile.gif For 1024x768 it still works fine)
So what do you think? I play rarely and in 1080p and usually in old games. (Prefer consoles). Power consumtion does not bother me - I've got 1200 W PSU thumb.gif

My other parts are i7 5820, 32 GB DDR4, Asus Rampage V.

Additional question is just how well R9 390 will work with R9 380 in crossfire (maybe I'll buy one just for lulz) and what performance gains I'll have?

Yea im gonna wait for sure smile.gif

Crossfire work with 100% scaling in some of my game. Seriously 30fps in windowed and 60fps in fullscreen ahah

Just some stutter from moving fast ( the gpu can stay loaded equally so usage drop and fps so not the best experience vs single gpu. Still if moving slowly it awesome solid fps increase.

Sorry for being out of subjec

it will perform 2 millions time better than the 9800gt ahah

You cant crossfire a r9 380 with a r9 390 Only r9 390 with 390x i think

Anyways crossfire is not that fun.

It do increase fps but some bug here and there and stutter. Im still happy with my crossfire price wise it awesome. But i would says next upgrade im probably going to go single gpu and have extra gpu for benchmark and or worst case scenario when the game is too heavy.

-snip-

With a 35.8% increase in core clock, and 8.6% increase in mem clock, single GPU got a 22.1% increase in AVG FPS, while dual GPU's got a 20.3%.. Scaling was at 87% stock, and 84% OC (would be much better with an OC CPU, but i'm too lazy to restart my PC ) tongue.gif.
I must have confused you with my diction, i meant Windows 10 and the DX12 Nvidia Drivers, not the API itself. That driver was what enabled WDDM 2.0 on Nvidia compatible GPU's, hence why i stated in my post that it's just more efficient/direct with windows 10. I didn't say it's just more efficient/direct with DX12, and that should have made you understand that i wasn't talking about DX12 API, but i guess you're just trying to make me sound dumb by cherry picking tongue.gif

Thanks for the detailed post and benchmark runs! biggrin.gif

Yeah I know that the performance increase doesn't necessarily scale linearly all the time when overclocking the core and the memory clock.

In a couple of the benchmarks I've run they've come close to scaling linearly, but sometimes they're a couple of percent off.

Nvidia has done some magic to 780 Ti drivers, even SOM with Ultra textures (requires a 6 GB card) at 1080p it does no longer stutter anymore and play butter smooth. Tried Watch Dogs too it doesn't stutter anymore. all that with 355.98 drivers. I have no doubt Nvidia got over the 3.5 GB issue of GTX 970.

I personally don't know how they think i would stick to a GPU that'll render all my games unplayable. I mean, i might like Nvidia specific features, but i'm not that much of a fan lol

970 if you only plan to single gpu and low res

r9 390 for high resolution and multi gpu setup
