If you're aiming to max out games then the performance hit will be pretty crazy, in the majority games sub 30-40 fps, however you can always use a custom setup of graphical settings.
Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin runs at a locked 60fps at 4K for me, looks fantastic and if I recall correctly Street Fighter V also did when I played it during the last beta test.
Only a true fanboy would wish the demise of a competitors product. Don't like the GTX 970? No one cares.
People just want to know what's best for them, both are great products however the R9 390 is more future proof, people like you fanboying like mad man is doing no favors for anybody.

If you're running a game and the GPU is running out of memory what works exceptionally well in the majority of cases is to reduce the texture quality, games don't simply stop running.
That's the stupidest thing I've read in a long time.
Please, learn more about hardware before you embarrass yourself again.
