But is there any way to gauge the pressure and see if it would work?

Is there something else I could use as a tester to see?

Lastly there are thick plastic washers under the cpu mount standoffs, if you removed these it would lower the cpu block down a bit, and this should make it fit nice and snug if it isnt already.
Thoughts? You can see what I mean on this link here: https://shop.ekwb.com/shop/media/upload/image/DSC_0452_590d.JPG
If you remove those washers you might damage the motherboard when screwing in those screws into the backplate... You could use thinner washers, even paper ones that EK had in their earlier days.

Somewhat like these: http://i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/439922808/Insulation_paper_washer.jpg

Yeah I have some thinner ones from GPU's.

They dont fully fit over the thread but might be able to make the whole a little bigger.
That should work fine.

I'd like to hear from anyone else that's done vice only on a Skylake before I try again on these.

Pretty sure the one that broke in the first page had been through a few cold cycles which made the pcb more brittle at the edges.

I tried to use a heatgun initially; I would say I used it while the clamping force was at about 50% of what eventually caused the heatsink to break free.
I stopped using the heatgun because I felt that the back of the chip was getting too hot and I was concerned about the components desoldering.
(The chip was too hot to touch, even with light gloves)

As far as heat-cold cycles: I only fired up the chip once before deliding to make sure it wasn't a dud.
So it only had ~2 heat cycles on it.

And I have tested it after the delid... it still works biggrin.gif

I used CLU on the die, put the IHS on and clamped it in the socket (I did not reseal it).

I found heat to help a lot with the razor method on my Haswell delids. I just installed the chip and ran some benchmarks to really warm it up (with cooler installed). The time I didn't heat up a 4790k it was very difficult to cut the adhesive with the razor and plastic card I use. Ended up nicking the chip in multiple places and thought I killed it. I put some clear nail polish over the gouges and it's worked fine for a year though luckily.

Hey guys smile.gif
Just want to share some of my experience. I already delidded about 10 skylake CPUs and also tried a lot of different ways for direct die mounting.

I first thought it would work with my OC Frame (https://www.caseking.de/der8auer-haswell-oc-frame-fsd8-014.html) but it turned out that the PCB is just too thin for a normal direct-die-mount. Also the EKWB kit won't work because there is nothing to push the CPU down on the edges. The OC Frame works well with Haswell and Ivy but not with Skylake.
Skylake PCB is 0.78 mm thick whereas the Haswell/Ivy/DC PCB is 1.18 mm thick.

So for now I wouldn't waste my time with any direct die solutions.

I'm working on a Skylake OC Frame at the moment but it's:mad: not too easy because some boards are slightly different when it comes to the socket and components around it.

This is the result if direct-die-mount fails:

Maybe a little bit difficult to see but there is a crack right in the middle of the chip wheee.gif

That die looks like it is also scratched up!?
The scratches are no big deal. That just happens after a lot of mounts.
