Comair Rotron Galaxy fans - best fans I've ever seen

Thread Starter

Has anyone here ever seen these bad boys? I happened to get my hands on 4 of these not too much time ago, and I was absolutely mesmerized by them.

I've had some experience with a fair number of models of Deltas and even a few Sanyo Denkis.... And these Comair Rotrons put them to shame. They feel so sturdy that you could probably hit them with a hammer and they'd tell you "is that all you've got?" biggrin.gif

Apparently, these come from a IBM server. I wasn't able to find any info about this particular model (1.65a, 20W), but a slightly more powerful model (22W) of the same Galaxy series states 3900rpm, 175cfm of airflow and 173pa of pressure (17.64 mmH2O), and that's pretty much what you'd expect from such a fan.
What's really interesting however is that they're definitely more silent than other comparable fans. Both motor and turbulence noise are lower than what I got with my Delta AFB1212SHE and FFB1212EH. And they undervlot very well, at 5V they weren't what you'd call "silent" but it was acceptable. And the best thing is that they've got the 4th wire for PWM control.

Unfortunately, they're non-standard. Dimensions are 127x38mm. They have mounting holes for 120mm spacing, but you can't fit them easily over a radiator or in a place that has the exact spacing for 120mm fans. The cable uses 22 (or maybe 20?) AWG wire and the connector looks like some of those you'd plug directly to the PSU. As such I'm having a hard time finding a way to put them to use.
Oh, and their weight is something like half a kilogram each.

Isn't it just beautiful?

If you have a 120mm radiator, you could use it with the PWM function.

Does it click when undervolted?

These are the data sheets if you are interested:
http://www.comairrotron.com/catalog/dc-fans/galaxy-dc

Not sure if that model is listed here though.

The reason for the mass is the die cast zinc venturi. The long life San Ace are similar - they have a cast aluminum venturi. It has a mass of 620g. Nidec has the G series of very high pressure fans too. The 120mm version has a mass of 480g.

Just looking at the size of the hub to tip ratio though, it must generate quite a bit of static pressure.

For those interested, there's a couple on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xcomair+galaxy.TRS0&_nkw=comair+galaxy&_sacat=0

Unfortunately my model's specs can't be found on their website and my google-fu didn't produce any result.

Yes, most of the weight on there is the zinc venturi. However, the motor itself is enormous and there's quite a bit of metal on there, too. The sheer size of the motor makes for a very big deadspot but also gives the rotor an incredibly small amount of play.

Static pressure for a 22W model (this one is a 20W) was like I said 173pa.

I'll upload a video tomorrow. (It's 1am for me right now lol)
Unfortunately I sold all my remaining Deltas last week so I have no direct comparison.
One interesting thing though is that it looks like I scored real big. I don't see any 4-pin pwm ones for sale on ebay, they must be kind of rare.

They're on aliexpress:

They're pretty expensive though, $20/fan and up for the 120mm+ ones.

Also, I believe 127mm is a fairly common size in the server world.

The 120 are the "normal" ones of the Muffin series I believe. You should look for the Galaxy DC ones. I've found a few through big resellers and such but the price is unbelievable. A very big electronics and hardware reseller for industries here in Italy carries them but is asking for 75€ each.

Was finally able to change the connector from proprietary to standard 4-pin. Plugged it in my motherboard and.... Whoa.

******* silent. I couldn't believe an industrial, server-grade fan could get this silent without even tweaking the pwm curve.

Noise level was a little less than the AP181's on low setting from my friend's FT-02. Not Noctua-level silent, but you won't hear them if you have a good case and mount them well. You'll just have a very gentle "woosh" of the airflow which I actually find soothing and relaxing.
No clicks, no whine, no strange motor noise AT. ALL. These are built like a tank.

These suckers can actually be used in a normal, 24/7 rig without any ear protection. I'll just quote myself saying these are the single best 12vdc fans I've ever touched to date.

And by the way, these are used - not new. I believe they can do even better if I open them up and apply some new, high quality grease and possibly new bearings. Oh god now I need a change of clothes.
