Delid Service Questions

Thread Starter

Hello,

I have questions.

-What happens if the delid service goes horribly wrong and the CPU is damaged or broken? Is it tough luck, better luck next time? I understand those cases are rare, but I'd like to know.

-How exactly is the delid done, or do we specify? Is the CPU delidded by vice or razor, for example? CLU is applied, and I'm assuming by default the IHS goes back on. Is there an option for just a delid? (Since bare die + CLU would be messy to ship.) How is the IHS placed back on, by adhesive or without any adhesive?

I was under the impression that it's delid + CLU + IHS back on, no adhesive. But the site says: "HS is sealed back into place." Sealed back... how?

-How is shipping done? I pay shipping for the CPU to get there, and I pay shipping back? I'm assuming if I bought a binned chip from you guys, none of them are delidded but I can purchase the service and not have to pay shipping both ways (for obvious reasons).

Thank you.

-If the CPU is damaged during the delid process, it would be replaced as part of our warranty. Part of the price you pay is insurance against this.

-We have a special tool to remove the lid, similar to the vice-only method. The IHS is sealed back on with an epoxy, similar to how Intel glues the IHS on. Our epoxy isn't as strong as Intel's, so a second delid should be fairly easy if desired.

-Typically adhesive is not used when delidding, but we do it for simplicity's sake and ease of shipment. No dealing with messy CLU or balancing the IHS back on, you just pop the CPU in like you would if it hadn't been delidded. If requested, we can just remove the IHS/glue and let you do the rest.

-Yes, you have to pay for shipping there and back. If you purchase delidding with one of our CPUs, it would be delidded before shipping out to you.

That's very informative, thanks. If you don't mind, I've got a couple additional questions.

1. Do you check, after delidding, to make sure temperatures aren't impacted much by the epoxy?

2. If ordering a delid alongside a new CPU, does the process delay expected shipping time at all?

Thank you.

1. Yes, temperatures are checked before and after delidding. Resealing the IHS has little to no impact on temperatures. The layer of epoxy that dries between the IHS and the die is much thinner than stock.

2. 95% of orders ship the next business day. I usually have a few CPUs out of each speed bin already delidded and ready to go.

So i've been thinking (and considering purchase) - i have 2 main questions, one relating to delid so i'l just post here i guess

1; I'm in UK, what shipping times and customs charges do people usually get if you know or anyone in my situation has ordered one? I've had few things coming from the US but recieved both slow and fast shipping times as well as no/low or extremely high customs charges. I was once charged ~£40 @ customs on a keyboard which i could have bought in the UK for £100 or so, which is 1/3'rd of the price of a 6700k here.

2; What's the history with delidded+resealed CPU's? Have a lot of them gone out, is there ever a problem with the TIM etc?

1) If you're mailing in your own CPU to be delidded then you shouldn't have much, if any, customs charges on the way back. If you're ordering a processor from us with delidding, I think you're looking at around 20% in customs charges. Shipping typically takes about 5 business days from what I've seen to the UK with priority mail express, more or less depending on how long customs takes to process the package.

2) I've had a 3770K delidded with CLU for almost three years now, and the temperatures on it are the same as they were from day 1. We have offered delidding since January, and haven't had any reports of problems with the TIM.
